hi there iv just recently lost my AGP which i had for four years. iv now just recently purchased BFA its 19 months old its quite friendly and talkative not sure of the sex. i would like to know is there much difference in the birds behaviours I've noticed that BFA eats a lot and is rather quiet a lot of the time but got told they was screechers got told not to approach it when it spreads its tail out like a fan also when do they reach sexual maturity. :green2:

generally when you get tail fanning and eye pinning it means to back off

I don't know. I always get the eyes flashing from my rescue zon. I didn't get the tail fanning when he nailed me today. However, the second time he took a shot at me, I might not have gotten the tail fanning because I had hold of it. That was right before he lost his balance and ended up on the floor of the cage.

He was a little nicer after that.

Eyes pinning is a body language clue that he is excited about something so be careful.

Welcome to blue front ownership. They can be extremely loving birds, but yes beware. The eye pinning and tail fanning can mean two things, excitement or anger. Both can end in a painful nip, amazons are renown for misplaced aggression. If you can get to know your bird then you should learn when it is/isn't a problem.
My bfa pins her eyes when she hears music or I sing to her for instance and she's fine. But if other people speak to her when she's on me.... That's a different story.

If he's quiet... You're lucky. Have you had him long?? As in is he still settling in???

Welcome. BFA are beautiful. Yes, eyes pinning is excitement or aggression while fanned tail could be extreme excitement but, even when it doesn't look as if the situation would warrant aggression, I never approach a zon with a fanned tail.

hello again thanks for all the advice its settling in rather well stepping on my hand now always wants to play sometimes bites too hard but dont think it means to hurt me. im trying to get it to go on one of them pirches to file its claws but it wont go near it even it even tho its the highest pirch iv even tried lowering it but no success its claws are geting long and sharp. ito the person asking it wasnt a parakeet it was an african grey she let herself out of the side food door while she was in the back on a sunny day i was devastated coz shed never done that before

Don't give up on the perch. It may take a while for the bird to accept it. I have placed mine strategically where they have to step on it like in front of the food and water bowls.

Bacon only had it for four weeks settling in really well coming on my hand and talking a few words only today has become quite aggressive. today my son has just came home and its the first time they have seen eachother and its being really friendly with him not sure wot thats about hope it weres off.

is there a way to sex my BFA other than DNA

To my knowledge you can have a bird surgically sexed, but you would have to knock the bird out. If you have the vet trim the bird's nails and accidently cut too short on one of them and it bleeds, you may as well have him DNA'd. It's not that expensive $35 at the most.
