Talking cage set-up rules

I am a new amazon mom.
I have upgraded the size of cage for my Sammy. the other was way to small that was given to me with him.

Now I need to know how to set it up.

is there a general rule for placement of his perch or toys?

how much is needed in the cage without being to much?

any plants or live tree's inside the cage a good idea?

the new cage is more than double the size of the old one. I am determined to make sure he is happy here. So any ideas?

I had asked for photo's in an earlier post. I would still like to see visual example's to if possible.

thanks to all

Perches go from the middle of the cage on up. Usually one running the length of the cage in the middle of the cage, then 2 0r 3 higher up. Lower than that, he probably won't use them, (only poop on them.) I usually put one by each food bowl, but they are just as happy perching on the actual food bowl.

My zon loves puzzle toys by the way... she likes untying knots and pulling off foot toys.

Generally speaking toys hang from the top, spaced far enough apart so that he has room to move.

Usually I have a wood chew toy or two, a preening toy. A rope boing.

any plants or live tree's inside the cage a good idea?

Generally not!

Re: cage set-up rules

this is just me....my DYH has a concrete perch and it is the highest perch in her cage, it helps to keep her nails filed and being that it is the highest it is her favorite, i don't put toys too close to the water or food dishes (she likes to put them in the bowls lol) and i don't have any live trees or plants, its scary to me bc so many things are toxic or have been sprayed with toxins and i don't want to take a chance and i don't know how to tell the difference, i also switch her toys out so she doesn't get bored with them as easily, except for her swing that is her favorite thing in the whole world, i have also been told that zons like things in threes like toys that have three dangly things (not sure how else to describe that) or you can attach three single toys together to make one, they like to hold ointo one with their beaks and one with each foot and swing like crazy

Re: cage set-up rules

Don't get rid of the smaller cage! It makes a good porch or garden cage , travel cage or sleeping cage. They can also be put up in another part of the house as a play pen. The most important part is if the bird does not like the new cage you still have it!
