Has anybody purchased any parrots from this company? I inquired about what their magna breeding pairs looked like so that I could get an idea of how one would look at maturity.

This was their response:

Colors and color variations in any double yellow head species or sub species can be moderate to extreme. It can take up to 25 years for magna sub species to reach full color. We have several pair that are extreme colored and some that are moderate colors, with extreme colored babies being being produced by moderate and moderate colored babies being produced from the extreme colored pairs, the recessive genes that produce the colors in this subspecies is not always predictable or reproduced like the parents. We have seen babies with little color actually be extreme colored as they reach their 10th year as where some very colorful babies did not change very much until they reached 2 decades of age. We have several breeding programs with genetics research on this subspecies as well the red african greys and red factor greys. We have seen many many birds offered by breeders being called magna thinking this makes their birds special, however the birds are nothing more than oratrix and no outward visual traits of magna one being full yellow stockings. We have researched this subsspecies for over 30 years. This subspecies origins are from the eastern slopes and mountains of mexico, where oratrix nominate species are from the central and southern mexico regions, only a slight geographical region separate the 2 and where they do overlap they do not breed or mix only in captivity where forced do these species and subspecies actually breed. we do not interbreed the two. Due to our selective breeding for over 30 years we have actually produced our own breeding stock that is pure species. Many of our customers are breeders searching for quality pure stock for their future breedings. We thank you for the interest in our programs."

I never purchase livestock sight unseen so I was wondering if anybody has any dealings with them, specifically their magnas. I do not understand their reluctance to show their breeding stock.

I have seen a couple of their youtube.com videos, but I would like to see a mature product before paying their high fees. Their website says they have been in business for 30 years so lets see something so prospective customers know what they may be getting.

Pinkbirdy, please tell me what you know about them. I only found out about them through Google.

Denise, you should try calling them, they are REALLY nice folks to talk to. :)

And YES, Magnas DO have full yellow stockings. :D So cute how they described that.

Also, their prices for their Magnas is not outrageously high, I'm sure you've seen that other breeders ask the same.

I talked to them after I lost my Quincy, but all their Magna babies were already sold that year.

Isn't that the breeders in Western NC? If so i've talked with them on the phone alot several years ago. I can't remember the managers name but they seemed to be fairly knowledgeable and professional. That doesn't mean that hand tamed babies for the pet trade is their norm , i would ask . Raising breeders birds or selling unweaned babies to a broker doesn't guarantee you'll get a well socialized ,tame baby. IMO most large scale breeding operation can't afford the time and effort it take to spend with so many babies. perhaps these folks do ,but you need to ask. I think your making good decisions in your search, enlisting the aid of folks like Wendy is a real plus. I'd ask them if you can visit and pick your own baby.

From what I have read on their website, nobody is allowed to visit due to the possibility of disease being brought in. I have seen a few of their videos on Youtube.com but it's only birds being handfed. It's a very large scale operation from what is seen online. That's why I am looking for testimonials/references.

This is a lifetime commitment so I want to be as informed as possible.

This operation is definitely about hygiene and I cannot blame them. Believe it or not, I am a bit intimidated about contacting them because they are so big. lol.

Kumiko the Calico Macaw DNA sexed female 8 years old:On her second month as a service animal–I'm very proud of her:-)
My understanding is that the company has an adjoining store for bird supplies that's extremely popular with the locals. Also, if you're already buying a bird, you can come and pick it out and up – they were going to be my breeder of choice before I decided on trying adoption of an older bird for service animal.

If I get another baby CAG, I'd go in person and literally pick out the bird. To me, it would be worth the plane ride, and I wouldn't have any problem dealing with their decontamination protocols-- once upon a time, before I was disabled, I was training to be a scientist.... So I might actually have stronger ideas on the subject than they do ;-)

In all seriousness, from a scientific basis, they do seem to have the best background on African grey husbandry and genetics. I could do them a few better, but only in a few areas and mostly due to extremely recent research.

I haven't called them yet only because I don't want to waste their time. I'm not currently looking to buy a baby. It's not to say I don't want one, but rather I need very specific things in the birds I have as service animals as opposed to the birds I have as pets.

If/when I bought from them, I would probably be the first customer buying a service animal – as opposed to a breeder or a pet.

I've heard nothing but great things about them concerning the animals they sold as pets.

I've got a rather chaotic week ahead of me.... Month really.... Maybe I'll send them an email about their policies for a person who is willing to go in person for the bird. I'm in New Jersey and they aren't that far from me via plane. Last time I was in North Carolina, getting to the airport took me longer than the actual plane ride. I'll let you know what they say if I get around to it, as far as picking out your own bird and handling procedures they use to ensure the proper decontamination to enable this.

I would rather pick my own bird out, well, have it pick me. lol. I think they have a long waiting list so that probably won't happen.
