Help, a new behavior action

Hi all,
Today my Sammy, orange winged Amazon, displayed a new behavior he has never done before....
First action:
While sitting on my hand he bent over and started nibbling at my hand, tender part between my fingers, but it was more like a dog "fleaing" not so much biting. never pinched at all.
Then later:
He climbed to me hand from the cage perch , reached up a foot for my other hand, then proceeded to somehow duck his head under one hand until it was in the palm of my hand. was very gentle and sweet with it all, and then he discovered my ring. He hooked his beak to it but was not "mean" or "forceful" in any way. he was more like snuggling in my hand.

Question's are this?
Do these behaviors somehow go together?
Is this any sign of him starting a mating season where I need to watch for aggressive behavior?
Or is he simply finally getting comfortable with me and just trying to be loving ?

May sound silly to some of you but he is my first amazon, any bird ever really, and I am still trying to learn all I can.

thanks so much to you all.

Also, his "baths" are still from a spray bottle, is it normal for him to try to run away? I spray him on the outside of his cage and he goes climb crazy. lol... He does however, spread his wings for me to spray him fairly good. may be doing that for his own reason to try to run, but I take advantage of it. lol

thanks again

Tihan - Yellow naped amazon (6+ years)
Parrots will preen your hair and remove anything 'extra'
It can be also to play, since rings are shiny and often has some stones/pattern.

My lovebird always chews a thik silver chain that I wear. I let him, because he does it instead of plucking.

All my Quakers would try to take off my earings.

Tihan, would remove all my 5 earings of my right ear in like 1.5 seconds before he figured out that the earings actially don't disturb me and I don't want them off.

Now, Tihan will gently chew my earings when he feels like love and cuddles, but he will leave them in place and also, will not destroy them if they're gentle.

Same with the rings.
My lovebird will get crazy nervous and will try to take it off.
It's like the end of the world for him if I don't take it off. He may think it disturbs me.
Tihan will just to try take it off and when I give him the ring, he will simply chew it.

For the baths, Tihan will move to a side if he does not want a bath. I guess it's equivalent of 'running away'.
Tihan also rarely wants to bath.

On my house, we got this kind of showers. It has a long water tube and can be dismounted.

I take my birds to the shower each morning. Tihan sits just on top of the shower.
I take that thing off to rince better my hair. When Tihan wants to bath, he just sits on that thing, so I will take him down when I will put down the shower and wet him.
I will usually sit him on my shoulder (requires some balance training for both of you, so your bird will not fall to the showers floor. Also, nail trimming must be done regularly :p)

It sounds like he's just being loving. They LOVE shiny things...IF my mom ever found out that Dixie chewed my 24k necklace in half, my mom had it made for me, she would kill me. So far she haven't asked why I'm not wearing it....lol....I learned to wear tough necklaces that they can't chew in half.

If he's opening his wings for you to spray, that means he's enjoying it!

I think he is getting more comfortable with you.
My DYHA is getting into these funny moves too lately.
Sometimes when I put my hand into her cage to pick her up and she is not sure she wants to step-up, she would grab my hand with one foot while holding her perch or just cage bars with another foot, then she just flips her body upside down and hangs like that holding my hand with one foot.
I take it she doesn't want to step up, but she doesn't want to offend me.....:).
I think your boy wants to play with you....don't they just melt your heart...;)

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
First one: He was preening you.

Second one: Sounds like, "my head itches. Scratch me there. Yeah, right there. Let me hold onto something so the finger stays put..."

My greenwing will grab a finger on my hand and hold on when I hit "the spot." Yeah, right there. Now don't move until I tell you to stop...

I have read that if they "lay down" it is a sure sign they are female and this is a part of a mating behavior..... Anyone know if this is true?

Sammy does that a lot when I talk to him, Even does it on my hand if I am holding him.
He is also shaking his wings while he is laying. just lifted them off his body, not spreading. He seems like he is shaking at other times to without the laying , best I cant describe it , its like a shiver that we would do in the cold.

anyone familiar with this behavior? I have read they tend to get moody during this time and I wanna be sure I know what is going on to avoid bites. lol

Back to your first question,,He's either preening you OR because he's preening your hand,,,he;s asking for you to preen him. Preening is a bonding ritual with mated pairs or a social acceptance with immature zons. Either case it's a good sign, you need to "master" preening to be a good mate(adult) or flock leader(immature). it's a give and take thing. My long time hen will tell me where to preen by preening me first in the same area. Or course if your good at it they'll show you where the "pinners" are, LOL.

Emmy does the laying while shaking her wings thing you described. She usually does it when we put her in her cage. She lays down on her food dish, holds her wings out from her body just a little bit and shakes them. I've come to assume it's her way of trying to get attention.
