Quick question..........

With Sammy not having been with me long and with him just opening up to me so well would it set us back in any bonding if he spends the night home alone?

We are planning a night away for our 15th wedding anniversary and my husband has planned us a couple of nights away. (3 days 2 nights) But I have him settling on only 1 night because I don't wanna leave Sammy that long right now. lol sorry lol But I don't have a sitter for him.

So, think he will be ok if we are gone a day? if so, how do I manage his crib cover? I cover him at night only, but should I leave him covered the whole time? don't want him to feel like i'm isolating him either.

I would prefer taking him with me lol

thanks

If you leave him alone for a whole day, how would he get fed? Can you leave your bird with a bowl full of food and not have it tossed out onto the floor of the cage? How about water?

Personally, I would get a travel cage and take your bird with. I don't think hotels have anything against birds, but you must be careful how the maids come in to clean.

I would not leave the bird covered. He could chew it up and get something lodged in his system.

Regardless leaving him covered all day is simply cruel.

I agree . I don't want him covered. I am just seeking help/advise on how to leave the cage if he has to stay home. Yes, the food & water issue is covered, I can leave some in the cage, he will be fine with that as far as just simply the making sure he is not hungry or in need of water. I could even have someone come by to check/restore food & water. But that would be someone visiting for a few minutes then gone. And he is back to being alone.
Bottom line is I don't wanna leave him behind. lol He is my baby and it will drive me nuts not having him with me. lol... I spend the minimum of 5 hours daily playing with him and working on training. I hate leaving for work. lol
Maybe I can talk hubby into putting the trip off lol (just kidding) I curious about the travel cage......is that the same as a dog carrier? if so, would that be something he could be comfortable in while we on the trip?
thanks to ya both

You could bring him with you, there are lots of travel carriers available. You could also have someone reliable to drop by, especially in the morning and nite. As long as his sleep and feeding schedule is consistent he should be ok. He might like it better if he spent the time at someone else's house also with people around. If you do decide to leave him, make sure the tv and lights are turned on for him during the day.

We have always left for overnights and just left the cage uncovered. As long as the bird will have access to food and water, it should be just fine. I'm sure it will be nervous by you not coming home, but every pet would have those same stresses unless it became used to it.
Anything longer than a single night away and I would have someone come take care of them every day. A buddy of mine has a Gala that he leaves for several days without an issue. His bird is healthy and well adjusted, and is happy to see him when he gets back.

With Gilbert, he goes with me. But if i had to go somewhere without him for a night, I know he would be fine. I would probably have someone stop in even just to stand outside his cage and talk to him for a while. His lights are on a timer and he doesn't dump his food but I always liked the idea of having someone who can check in anyhow. (Bird is ok, is eating, etc).
But one night shouldn't set you back if the bird gets plenty of attention otherwise.

Overnight is fine, I'd put out multiple food/water dishes (and a water bottle if he can use that) to ensure that there's less chance of food spoilage/pooped dishes etc.

Don't cover during the day, just ensure he's not near drafts at night. Leave radio/tv on a timer or something if you can and have someone pop by for food and water changing.

We leave our entire flock overnight fairly frequently. Merlin used to always come with us until we got Charlie and now it's not fair to leave one and not the other. We just ensure they're well supplied, have some one and one time before we leave, and plenty when we get back. IF we are to leave for longer, we'll get someone in to tend to them, but we've never had to do that.

I'm going away for the my birthday this weekend - and Andrew will be staying back a day, so they're only left overnight instead of two. Unfortunately, sacrifices have to be made!

Hope you enjoy your trip.

Thanks to you all for easing my mind. Luckily he does not throw his food out. So that part don't worry me. We have now got it set to be gone less than 24 hours lol. I always leave a radio and light on when I leave, also have a teacup chi in the house. Never leave her without a radio. Not in 13 years. It drowns out outdoor sounds.
I have started covering the sides of sammys cage at times with him inside, only the sides, for a short time while we are home just to help him get comfortable hearing but not seeing us just to see how he acts. I wanna ease my own mind on how he may act. Hubby says I worry to much, but he is another child of mine lol.
Thanks again to you all.

So now you're only going to be gone for the day? (you'll be coming home to sleep?)

If I had to be gone overnight and couldn't take Chili with me, I would find a family member or friend to bird sit for me. Chili spends pretty much all day out of her cage and hanging out with us, or doing her thing. She also gets 3 meals a day which need to be served and then cleaned up after a couple hours. She also has training every day. She's a busy girl, and I wouldn't want her to be alone all day...the most she's been alone (besides the plane flight here) has only been a few hours, and I always leave the radio on while I'm gone. So, I would want someone willing to spend a good portion of time with her. I also don't use a cage cover on Chili's cage; I think she is scared of her cage being covered.

Are you going to have someone come over to check on him?

The other option would be to buy a travel cage and take Chili with us. I saw a decent travel cage at mysafebirdstore.com for $40.

We will leave around 4-5 pm, get back around 10-11am next day. I would never leave and not have someone stop in to check on him. im also gonna check out the site for a travel cage.

Oh gosh, we've had George for 23 years and leaving him overnight has never been a problem. Extra food, lights and radio or TV on a timer, and he's just happy when we get back and extra talkative. I don't leave veggies out for him due to spoilage. More than two nights away, we have someone come in to change food and water or board him at the a-vet's. I don't leave him covered while we're gone and I'm sure he sleeps fine. He likes to pull his hanging toys around him to make a little hide, anyway. Amazons are pretty independent, I believe, and most importantly, your bird will be happier if you are happy! Don't sacrifice an occasional getaway!

No worries ! I know all about tired these days. When nit working all my time us spent with Sammy. When he goes to bed I am reading all about Amazon's. And spent all night on the forum. Lol
You have all helped me. And the proof is in the pic.
He spent more than a year cage bound before I got him. Now less than a month of being home with me, well the pics tell all.
Thanks to all of you here

One night should be fine if he has access to food and water and make sure he has toys etc to play with. I would not cover the cage. Though I am usually a home body. The rare occasions I am gone for the day with family or the rare overnight has not been damaging. Of course I do not do this without having everything set up for my bird. And if I was to go on vacation I would take him with me or have someone watch and take care of him while I was gone.
