DYH Amazon named Ollie
Hi,
I just brought my new DYH amazon home. He's not a bay but I don't think he's that old, maybe 2 years. I put him in a very large cage and he seems really happy. The only thing that concerns me is he's making what I can only describe as a huffing noise. Is he upset? He doesn't make is all the time and he's climbing all over the cage and hanging upside down. I have 2 cats and a small dog that are curious of him, is that too stressful for him. When I had him on a perch stand he was screaming his head off, but when I put him in the cage he seemed more calm. Any thought s would be appreciated. I want to make sure I start him off on the right foot. Also, any suggestions to get him to quite down when he starts to scream would be good too, but I know it also comes with the bird territory.:D

Firstly MANY congrats on bringing home your new DYH. We would LOVE to see some pictures...pretty pretty please??? With sugar on top!!! :D

If he has never been around a dog or cats, yes, he will most likely sound the alarm each time he sees them. He will get used to them, just give him time.

I "think" the sound you are describing is the sound Amazons make when they see something new or strange that they are unsure of. He should settle down in a few days. :)

Since you JUST brought him home, he will have to get used to his new surroundings, his new routine, his housemates, etc. Amazons usually adapt pretty quickly.

I'd sit by his cage, and quietly and softly talk to him/read to him. If he gets nervous when you directly stare at him, avoid eye contact at first. Then, as he settles down, you can start offering some tidbits of goodies by hand.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Huffing noises?!

Can you describe that one a little better.

If he were upset he would be generally be growling, or doing the "amazon alarm" scream, and this is usually accompanied by "posturing" i.e. hunched over, wings out, eyes pinning, pacing back and forth, neck feathers up, i.e. SERIOUSLY CRAZED AMAZON.

Subtle these birds are not!

Thanks so much for your replies. It sounds like if you close your mouth and blow out your nose, not like blowing your nose hard, but softer. He looks healthy to me so I don't think he's sick. I've been visiting him everyday at the bird store for the last week and never heard him make this noise. I think he might be just reacting to the new home. He comes right to the side of the cage when I talk to him. He likes me to talk sweetly and quietly to him. I attached some pictures of him and his cage. Any advice on treats that Amazons like?

He's gorgeous!

DYH amazons are fond of fingers... that seems to be a mainstay of their diet!

As far as treats go: mine like Nutriberries, cashews, pistachios, peanuts, safflower seeds, sunflower seeds, pasta, and any potato anything... (baked, chips, french fries, sweet potato, mashed potato, you name it.)

Any of the above will probably work for training treats.

As far as the huffing noises, I don't think mine do that one.

The closest thing to it, my lilac crown amazon Hisses... (but it doesn't mean the same thing as when a cat hisses.)

Mine get rather vocal when they get upset. In fact, I can't think of a single zon I've had, or fostered, that didn't give you an earful when they were upset. So this is a new one on me.

Oh yes, he is STUNNING!!! :D I'm all smiles here - I am quite partial to the DYHs myself. ;) And I just LOVE his cage and how you furnished it!!!

I truly think the noises are those of a somewhat "unsure" Amazon. He'll stop once he is used to everything. :)

You will have a LIFELONG friend there!! :D :D

What a beautiful DYH

Huffing noise like in little grunts?
Mine does something like that and it generally means from him, I'm not too happy with this and thinking about getting madder LOL

Amazons like their food, so try a variety of things.
All the things birdman said also popcorn, crackers, baby cookies, my DYH loves little pieces of chicken/fish/cheese.
Beware though of the amazon perch potato, they need a balanced diet and exercise.

Congrats

So, Ollie...that's what I named him, seems to be settling in quite nicely. He steps up in and out of his cage. I've had him on his perch stand, no problem. He just looks at the cats, doesn't seem to be too stressed out or anything, and when my kids got home from school (They're teenagers) He let out a big "Hi, what are you doing?" when he saw them. It was very cute. Pickle, my cat got up on top of his cage when I wasn't looking and Ollie was just sitting on his perch looking up at her.

Congratulations on bringing home Ollie! He is very handsome! I love double yellow amazons! In fact I just brought my little girl home two weeks ago. I have been around many babies but I have to say that amazon babies are a whole new thing to me. They have different types of body language than the other babies I have weaned. They make lots of "grumbly" noises which Wendy as well as my breeder is telling me that they never outgrow. It's funny, they are not shy about telling us how they feel. The noise that you are hearing sounds similar to a noise Mabel made when I brought her home. It has gone away and I feel that what Wendy told you is correct. I think it is probably a noise from nerves. Have fun and keep us posted with how it's going!
