Still learning about my OWA's behavior so I wanted to ask here.....

Today Sammy has laid his beak between my fingers. I just rubbed his beak between my thumb and index finger. First he was on his cage and walked to me standing with my hand on the lower side of the cage. I thought it was a fluke. Like he was wanting a head scratch but he didn't try to move my hand. the second, a couple hours later sitting in my lap. This is the first time he has done this. Blew my mind. My question, is this something parrot are known to do regularly? I ask because I keep hearing so many things about behavior , bonding, obsession, and temperament if close mating time. I wanna make sure it don't mean something to do with sexual maturity behavior. Pass couple of days he has been chewing on my fingers and licking my hand. Not aggressively. Is this normal "safe to handle" behaviors or do I need to start being worried about him turning mean.

He will grab a finger on each hand and flip onto his back in my lap to get my fingers. Lol
Sometimes he will just hold it, slowly adding pressure. I eventually have to blow in his face

to make him release.

Pritti (Cherry-Head Conure) -- Fly in Peace my beautiful boy. Forever I'll love you.
Your Sammy is just playing and having good fun. Pritti does all that you described. It it so cute when they can "talk" to us with their gestures. They know what to do so that we'll "get it". I love when Pritti does the finger grabbing, roll over thing too.

Have fun.

Most zons like to have their beaks rubbed/scratched. It doesn't have anything to do with mating behavior or hormones.

It's OK to ask "crazy" questions. That's how we learn about our companions.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
You want to stay away from stroking the bird's back during mating season...

Trust me, when it happens, you'll know immediately.

Bosley our DYH amazon loves his beak stroked and he loves gently nibbling and playing with my fingers. He does it all year round and henpecked is dead on not hormonal at all. You will know hormonal when you see it.

Thanks for this topic - I was wondering the same thing.
My zon always tries to grab my fingers through his cage bars but in an attempt to pretend I don't realise he wants to bite, I wait until he's hooked his beak over a bar and then in gently grab his top beak between my thumb and forefinger and babble something like "ooh, where's my naughty beaky?" Or whatever pops in my head.
So, what I'm trying to say is - its not a crazy question, it helped me too!:)

Not a zon, but my Sennie also enjoys having her beak rubbed. She likes to hold onto a finger on one hand while I rub her beak with the other hand.

Sammy does it the same way. Hangs on to my finger for dear life and nudge his beak between my fingers.
As far as knowing when mating season is........ I hope someone will post the normal seasons or times that usually comes around. What signs to look for and how ling it last would be helpful. I sure don't want to find out the hard way lol.
I have found so far he don't like his back touched. So I want ever go there. Lol

I rub Emmy's beak sometimes, too, when I pet her. It's not skin, but I figure she can still feel it. She has not objected. I figured she would if she didn't like it.
