Charlie the birdie, yellow naped amazon and little bird, a monk parrot , and Polly -yellow crowned amazon
Charlie is being slowly rehabilitated into a model citizen and the journey is amusing sometimes. As part of his rehab we go out in public now so he can see the world and meet new people from the safety of mom's arm. Charlie loves to ride in the car and trill at the world out the windows. Usually Charlie does not speak when there are people nearby. He prefers his orations to be private ;) Anyway, I took Charlie to an outdoor BBQ place not too long ago and, as usual, people want to take a closer look and ask a multitude of questions. The often asked what kind of parrot, can he fly and the ever popular does he talk? I answered with; Amazon, yes he can but he is lazy and yes he does talk but not really in front of people. Standard stuff. Charlie must have been tired of the attention (though usually he is such a ham) because when this very nice couple took a step closer to say hello, Charlie said very clearly "Step back" and he scooted a bit closer to my shoulder. I laughed and turned my body just a bit so he felt sheltered from the couple who were laughing in amazement. The owner of the BBQ stand knows Charlie and I and she was giggling too but I thought it best to say our goodbyes and leave. Charlie wanted to leave but he kept saying "hello" as we got in the car. He loves his brief appearances in public and I think they are good for him but at least he knows when to draw the line. I laughed when I told him he was being rude but he ruffled his feathers as if to say the couple was impudent and then settled into his silent bird dignity. He has such personality! He held onto the dignified bit for about two minutes til a bouncy song came on the radio and he had to bob along.;)
