Zack, a Blue Fronted Amazon
Learning a lot by reading this forum, but still have questions. Zack is my new BFA and I try to keep food in there for him but just how much should I be feeding him a day? Also, I tried pricing pellets at the pet stores and really can't afford their prices. Walmart and Miejer don't carry the pellets, just a seed & fruit mix if anything. Anyone know of someplace to get the pellets cheap?

He has taken to occasionally rubbing his lower beak against the wood perch in his cage, is this a symptom of something (hope not, can't afford a vet right now).

Finally, for those who have followed my last thread, Zack has gone from staying mostly in one spot by his food bowl to moving around the cage. He has also started to let me pet him...at least for short periods of time...without trying to bite. When he does go to bite, he moves slowly, giving me time to get away. The only exception to this is when I had to open his cage this morning to pick up his food bowl which he had tossed onto the floor. He came after me with a vengance then! One step at a time I guess. :)

Thanks in advance for any info!

Doug

Amazon.com carries Harrison's pellets, so check their prices.

The beak rubbing is fine, they do it regularly after eating to clean food off and they do it as sort of grooming thing. Chili likes to sharpen her beak on her perches- helps with cracking stuff open and chipping wood... Or eating my walls. Lol

Pelleted food is the most expensive at a small mom and pop pet store. I found the best prices by buying in bulk at a bird fair. A 20-pound or more bag will last six months or more depending on the size of the pellet. I purchase conure size to prevent waste on the bottom of the cage. Harrison's is the most expensive because it is organic which makes the shelf life shorter once it is opened. There are a variety of pellets available. I would Google your choice of pellet and compare prices. PetSmart and Petco carry pellets too.

I feed pellets, i spend a lot on pellets, however i think i spend more on fresh fruit and veggies. I buy large bags because i have many zons. Several of the feed stores and pet shops carry the large bags, ordering from Drs Foster and Smith online is about as cheap, i think they have free shipping on orders more than 50$. Some of the pellet manufactures will send you samples if you ask. I'd find a brand that you and the bird like first. Always check expiration dates and store large amounts in the freezer.

Thanks guys, that helps. Geteozzy thank you for letting me know about the beak rubbing. I don't know enough yet about behaviors yet to know what is normal and what is not.

Percy always has pellets available but prefers his fresh stuff. I noticed today he loves being fed the pellets by hand LOL!

Doug you could probably call the different pellet companies and ask if they can send you (free?) samples- that way you can see which pellets Zack likes.

Harrisons, Roudybush, Zupreem, Pretty Bird, TOPs (Totally Organic Pellets) are the ones I can think of right now...and they're all on amazon.com but I'm sure you can find them on different sites.

I feed more fresh fruits and veggies than pellets though; Chili gets about 85% of her diet is fresh and the rest is bird bread with ground up pellets in it, nutriberries (also have pellets in them), and some seed.

Hey, me again, at the risk of sounding like a crazy stalker, we were fortunate to end up with an over abundance of bird supplies, and would love to make a donation to your little buddy.

My email is [email protected], and I would be more than happy to send him a care package, if you send me your address.

I'm not weird or anything. I just love parrots :)

Would u mind telling me about your pellet food. Name brand ? Where to find it? Cost? Sammy has gotten to where he hardly eats the food he has now. I read here pellets are best but no one in my lil hick town has it.
Thanks

I heard the same rhing which is why I was asking. I know petsmart has pellets but are, for me, too expensive. The replies to my initial post have been most helpful in looking for alternatives.
