Perches
Hello guys,
Some of you might remeber my OWA and her bunblefoot problem... it's under controlk for now. The thing is Lily my 9 months old DYH has pink spots under both feet. I got rid of her rope perch for now and she has different sizes for now including 2 dragon woods perches. I'd like to ask you guys if your amazon ever got sore spots ? and what types or perches you guys use ? For Kiwi i have dragonwood perches and and her feet are still a bit red but it doesn't seem to bother her for now. I put aloe gel on her feet everyday. |

Re: Perches
I use various dragonwood perches (bark still attached) for my Amazons with variable thickness. Additionally they have a boing and manu mineral perches (which they love).
I've never seen pink spots on either feet. ![]() |

Re: Perches
Does anyone use PVC perches anymore ? I use to make my birdstand perches from this. I also use them to keep the birds from climbing down the side of the stands. They can't get traction on the PVC, and in this case it is good.

Re: Perches
I've used the PVC on the upright part of the stand to stop birds from climbing down. The PVC doesn't make a good perch because it's too uniform in size. That creates "pressure sore" on the birds foot because it always "hits" in the same spot. The natural wood perches allow the foot to grip in different areas because of the irregular shape. If i where making a shower perch then PVC would be a good choice, however it not something the bird spends many hours a day on.

Re: Perches
That is exactly how I use the pvc. It is on the vertical part of the stand so the birds can't climb down to the tray and poop all over the floor. LOL
All the perches are oak and the cement perches for perching in the cage.

Re: Perches
From looking at your pictures it appears that you might be using oak dowels or closet rods. The same issue as PVC or pine dowels. They are consistent in shape and size. The birds feet are always using the same surface area when perching. This can lead to the sores on their feet. IMO natural Perches of the proper diameter are best.
