One of my favorite subjects is what do you use for covering the bottom of the bird cage floor ? Do you use Corn Cob, shavings, ground cardboard or Crushed Walnut Shells ?
I stopped using shavings many years ago. It is a mess and goes all over the floor. If you have any breathing problems, the shavings will do you in. LOL
The Corn Cob doesn't seem to absorb much and the ground up cardboard doesn't interest me. My choice is the crushed walnut shells. They are extremely safe and easy and less expensive to use. I noticed that in the bird store where I shop they covered all the bottoms of the wooden bird stands with the shells. It clumps up just like cat litter. I scoop it up with a special cat scoop with small holes and shake the crushed shells back into the bottom and throw the waste away. It lasts a long time and I never see it on the floor.

I can't use regular paper because the birds pull it up through the grate.

best to use is plain old newspaper. other types of bedding can promote bacteria and mould growth and cause impactions if birds eat it. plus its next to impossible to monitor droppings for health reasons.

Yup, I agree fully with DallyTsuka. I am a manic poop checker and anything other than paper would hide the poop. Also, I clean my cage twice a day - midmorning after breakfast and his firstt circuit around the cage to inspect his foraging times and toy bowls and again late afternoon so that he goes to sleep in a clean cage. Using anything other than paper would make this a major chore.

Yes! I agree with DallyTsuka and MomtoPercy. Plain old newspaper. Cleaner cage and easier to check poop. I spray the paper with a mister, then roll up the whole mess. Doesn't take long at all.

Good Grief!!! I just realized I'm a manic daily poop checker too.

I also use newspaper in my cages. It is much easier to keep track of their poop as everyone else mentioned, and so simple to clean the cage.
