Really need some advice - worried sick

Hi all. My amazon parrot is my absolute pride and joy and I love her to death. however, i put her in her cage while I went for a shower and when I came down she had somehow managed to get herself caught up in one of the toys around her neck. I have cut her free but am terrified that she is not going to be ok. Her 'voice sounds hoarse' although she is making the odd little squeak. I have made her some of the handrearing food she had when a baby and she has taken a little. But she is being very quiet and not moving around much from my shoulder. Is this just the shock? Has anyone experienced anything like this and their baby be ok?I don't care if she never says another one of her funny little words as long as she will be ok! Ten minutes on and she has preened herself a little and doesn't look fluffed up any more. What can I do to help her?

She probably gave herself a hell of a fright and is ablittle sore. Keep a close eye on her and if she does anything worrying, goes downhill or isn't eating etc I would get her to a vet asap

Thanks for your reply. She is moving around a little and has yawned a few times but has had a drink. Is wanting to stay very close to me and was asking me to rub it where it must be a bit sore - so thinking it can't be really bad as surely she wouldn't be able to stand it being touched? Thankfully it hasn't cut the skin. Have put her to bed and going to keep checking on her in the night.

has made me realise that while toys packaging show parrots happily playing with them in their cages, this is not a guarantee of safety. I didn't think there would be any way she could get her head stuck in the tiny loop. Needless to say they are all removed and all she has in there are perches. Lesson learned the hard way.

My poor daughter (aged 9) was the one that found her so she has gone to bed traumatised also. In the panic I dropped my phone which is now broken and also in the birds scramble to be free she has accidentally scratched my chest quite badly which is very sore and quite deep. But a small price to pay as long as she is ok in the morning. I am usually so calm when it comes to other people's animals and problems but I honestly value her more than some of the human friends I have so feel sick to my stomach!

I am so relieved to hear your bird is ok.....!!....that was a close call.

you are correct some toys are dangerous for birds/parrots and have to have constant supervision.

One of my cockatiels Num Num, had his beak broken. He got it caught in a chain link from a Polly Perch swing, and required emergency surgery due to it being broken in 3 different places.....he is fine now thank goodness.

could you please post a picture of the toy you are referring to, we have a dangerous toy thread on here, you can either post it there, but if you can't locate it, after you post the picture here, maybe one of the mods can move it to the appropriate section.

I have cut it down and thrown it out. It was a hanging wooden loveheart designed for birds to chew(there were three in a set but they have gone also, one of them was not wooden though it was like loofah type material) which attached with a small loop of string. Will try and find a picture. Much smaller than the birds head. Annoying thing is it isn't something I would have chosen but came in a parrot christmas hamper for greys/amazons. Been hanging in her cage since christmas with no problem. Just lucky that we were in and not at work/school. x

Aww, i know the feeling! My Barraband got his leg ring caught twice! the first time there was blood and i had been out all day so no idea how long he had been stuck, luckily my partner was home and he was able to help me. The second time i was home when it happened and luckily it wasnt so bad and i was able to free him myself. Sure gets your heart racing!!

a picture would be great, it just may prevent this from happening to another bird.

Oh gosh! Talk about a heartattack for everyone! Please keep us update on how she is doing. Sorry that you suffered such a gash, but I am sure it is worth it. It is sad that nothing is really safe, no matter how hard we try, even with children.

I have gone through something similar before with a peanut holder toy that Willie got his foot stuck in the toy and my partner happened to be home when he did it and called me to come home to rescue him. It was made by Kaytee and I asked them to remove them off the shelves but I just research it to find another company made one like it and some other birds had similar issue but they were in worse shape ending up at the vets back in 2012. When I asked kaytee to remove it was back in 2005 when I took pictures of the incident. If you contact the manufacturer, most should be willing to work with you like Kaytee did with me. But of course I had pictures to prove. Those toys aren't to be seen anymore as they're dangerous.

Glad your baby is doing okay...luck for us the worst we have had is Parker once got his wing stuck in the cage top while playing on his back, I was right there to rescue him...we were able to put down a sea grass mat to avoid future issues

Thanks all. She is OK this morning, still a little quiet but has eaten, said hello and made a few baby sounds. Trying to leave her quiet to rest her throat though. x

This happens from time to time.

Wow, I'm so happy for you that she wasn't hurt too badly! Poor baby! Unfortunately, birds ARE like small kids and can get themselves into all kinds of danger. We need strong hearts to be parronts!

She is back on fine form now - singing jingle bells in February and enjoying the ice dancing on the winter olympics :)
