Red Palm oil?

My Mom used to give Guacamole red palm oil thinking it helped her with her necrotic foot syndrome. I have a tub of it, but I'm not really sure how much to give her. I assume she put it in a bowl with treats, as she doesn't really seem to go for it by itself. Is it helpful to rub on dry feet, or would that just encourage her chewing on herself?

I feed her a good quality seed mix (she has never taken to pellets), and lots of fruits and veggies. Any suggestions on what I might else I might add? The vet weighed her at about 465kg, so I think she is at a good weight.

When I warm up the morning mash I alternate between using unrefined organic coconut oil or red palm in the pan it is very good for them.

Hey Guac, welcome to the forum. I use RPO and also fresh Palm Nuts, i spread a product called "Sunshine Factor" (food quality RPO) on dry toast and my zons all love it. It's high in VitA and your zon on seeds needs that badly. I see many older rehome zons that are dying from fatty liver and other liver issues from years of sunflower seeds. Variety is best in their diet. Red palm Oil (RPO) ,sweet potatoes, carrots,squash,etc would help keep a zons healthier,longer when on a high fat seed diet. You should try Wendy's birdie bread recipe, her birds are in great shape. PS it's hard to gauge health when comparing zon weight. I have 500 gram napes and 800 gram napes, all are healthy but from different subspecies. Handling,feeling their "breast", is the best way to guage "body fat" on your zon and that usually takes some experience. A good AV should be able to make that call. Keeping tract of your birds weight is a good way to head off other health problems especially if your trying to modify their diet.
What you call "necrotic foot syndrome" is that the same thing as "bumble foot"? If so there's many other things you can do to help with that. Take some pics of her feet (and perches) and let us check it out.

I am trying small pellets now, and she just thumbs her beak at them. I'll try pushing them into fruit to sneak them in. I bought a bag of crazy corn (i think), boiled it with water and gave her some. She loved it! I gave her it again this morning, warming it up in the microwave and nothing. Didn't have a bit of it. I will make notes of your suggestions and try them. She gets lots of fruits and veggies, but I guess I should be giving her less bananas and berries and more sweet potato and carrots.
I don't know what bumble foot is, but necrotic foot is when they actually mutilate themselves. It is so very difficult and just breaks my heart. I responded to the link about the similar problem, saying that it could be hormonal, seasonal or medical. It was suggested maybe pins and needles type sensation, arthritis or other pain. It seems that meloxicam might be helping. Thank you for the great information. I will keep you posted on our progress.
