Good progress with my adopted Red Lored

Hi everyone....its been a while since I posted about my new 18 yo Red Lored I got in January 2014 from a parrot rescue. (he was there for a year)I've had him now for about 3 mos and have made some good progress. The best advice I was given here was to go slow and let him set the pace. This has worked out very well! He now almost always chooses to step up since I don't insist...he fluffs up all his head and neck feathers when I scratch his head, and will turn his head all around so I get the right spots including under his jaw. He is still amazingly quiet...just small chirps and imitates a cockatiel. I now realize he does the quiet cockatiel sound when he wants attention or food. He is now happy to sit on top of my open laptop and look out the window while I'm on the computer. He is just beginning to shred cardboard tubes I gave him...but still does not play with any of his toys.

I had very little expectation when I brought him home that he would get very tame. This low expectation has helped us a lot! I don't push him to "like me" and don't take any behavior "personally". (I'm happy that he has not bitten me... yet.) I've just been waiting patiently for whatever happens. We are slowly coming to know each other and enjoying the whatever time it takes. I want to thank those who had written with advice and stories. They are all helpful. I recently read this good article and thought I'd share it here...I'm sure many of you already know these things, but they are helpful to re read.
Stress Reduction Methos for Companion Parrots by Pamela Clark

Snickers is pretty fine with me in my office, but gets nervous when I carry him around the house. We are taking very short walks around house, and back to my office. He gets a sunflower seed when we get to another room.
Just going sloooooow with it all. ;o) Debra

Snickers is adorable! Glad your making good progress with him. We let Kiwi go at his own pace too, and he is a sweetheart (most of the time at least;))
