Well, I did spend some time with Rosie Friday at the shelter. Also had a real heart to heart talk with Jeanne, who runs A Helping Wing. She has always been kinda standoffish about me adopting Rosie... and Friday the interaction with Rosie kinda was why. I don't think she wanted to tell me outright no, she said part of their hope was that Rosie would have one of those moments when they know its the right person and they let everyone know the adoption should happen.... let's just say that was not what went down.

Rosie fought me coming out of the cage, but he fights everyone coming out of the cage. He was quite upset with the fact that I did not back off or let him have his way, so he spent quite a bit of time avoiding me. But let him have his pout time and worked with him a little more, but Rosie made it clear he had no interest in me and I had quite a few bites to show for it. At one point it was actually funny, he would walk to the other side of the table and literally stand with his back to me. I joked that it was clearly a one sided love affair. I offered him his favorite treats and he took from me and tossed it to the floor (for a second I had a flash of Folger!!).

So, I am totally willing to accept that an Amazon may not be an instant love affair, tho this was actually the third or fourth time I've spent time with Rosie and its always been this type of indifference. But this was the first time, we did not have any other birds out. And the whole time he was out, he did not say a word or make a peep. The irony was that we helped with feeding and cleaning cages, and Rosie while in the cage was just yapping away at me and called to me for attention several times.... so why the difference?

That is where the heart to heart with Jeanne comes in... she was hoping it would go differently, especially because she knows how much I adore Rosie. But, her worry that Rosie has been almost institutionalized, meaning, he is happiest when he has his flock of Amazon friends. And there is a rowdy group of 4 Amazons that have cages grouped together. I believe if I really pushed to bring him home, she would let me try it, but after our talk and realizing who / what Rosie is, I am not sure he would be happy in our home. That is unless I adopt the entire group of amazons, and sorry guys, no amount of cyber bullying is gonna make that happen!! :)

But, the good news here.... and there is good news :) I am disappointed because I just think Rosie is beautiful and so funny, he was calling to me and I kept do video of him calling me for attention, but everytime I got the video going, he would stop yelling hot bananas and start yelling f*^@n aye... which I obviously won't be posting!! Anyway, Jeanne and her husband, John, had already spoken about Rosie and me and options if Friday went poorly. They both thought we should try working with Paco the blue front amazon that was friendly to me and Victoria. The odd thing, Paco is not overly friendly to most people, so they thought that match might be great for Paco. And even before Rosie came out and treated me like a blind date gone terribly wrong, she kept telling me about an Amazon surrender that was coming in. She said first person she thought when she met this girl was me, opposite of Rosie, starved for attention, very sweet for an Amazon.

So that's the latest... everyone involved agrees that Rosie coming into a home as the only Amazon is not in his best interest, especially for how long he's been with the other birds at the shelter. Funny to think a bird is happier in a shelter, but they do have a great life there, so not like he's in a tiny cage with no toys or fresh foods... he's got a pretty good thing going on!!

But, still looks like there is an Amazon in our near future :) Victoria is going over to help with the shelter for a few days this week, so she will be meeting the Amazon girl before me... She also can spend some time with Paco, so we shall see what her thoughts are! But while no Rosie, we'll keep you updated on the which Amazon will it be adoption process :) :green:

Well bo-hoo. :( I wish Rosie would have been more cooperative. :(

But I completely and fully understand why he may not have been a good match, and that he may have been unhappy with your current flock.

Maybe (hopefully) one day someone will enter the rescue and hit it off with Rosie AND another zon, so maybe they could then be adopted out together. OR someone who already has a zon or two will take Rosie in. :)

Now I truly hope things will work in your favor with Paco. :)

Jen, I'm sorry that it didn't work out with Rosie, after thinking that all along it was going to happen. It looks like this may have happened for a reason... because "someone else" is out there who is meant to be :).

As strange as it sounds about Rosie seeming to like the shelter better, I've seen that sort of thing happen. At one time I had the sweetest female Cuban Amazon. She was at the bird store for years, and she was a young adult, because she didn't seem to like anyone and loved it at the store. When she was home with me, my house (2 other birds) environment was way too quiet and sedate. I lived alone and worked. She had plenty to keep her occupied, and she made it clear it wasn't ME who she was missing when I was away... So, long story short, after a long while of trying to make her as happy as my other bird were in our environment, she just wouldn't. I took her to a caring, loving bird store who also welcomed rehomes. When she got there she INSTSANTLY lit up!!! SO incredibly happy, she was practically smiling and laughing. She remembered a "store environment" and I'd never seen her so elated. I was in tears from being upset about missing her, but I was so glad she was happy. She ended up living with the owner's friend who had LOTS of birds and a busier environment.

Best wishes whether it is Paco, or the new zon coming in, or someone else. I know you'll end up with the perfect new girl or guy for your family :)

Thanks to both of you for your thoughts... I am disappointed but yes, I do believe this happened because there is another bird that should be with us. Might be Paco, could be a reason why he seems so happy to talk to me and Victoria, but he wants little to do with anyone else. He might turn out to be the perfect Zon for our group.... or as Jeanne said, the new girl coming in she thinks would be a perfect match to me, Ivory and our lifestyle. So, agreed all things happen for a reason! I'll make sure Victoria gets all of us photos of the new girl since she gets to see her before me!! I might have to make a trip over the shelter while she's there just to meet the new girl :)

Thanks again to both of you for your thoughts and support :)

So that means we will be tossing your bed outside so you can fit Max into your room... I get my amazon first then you can talk to the shelter about a bird with a can opener on his face :) tho Max was so sweet and the reaching out to gently touch you with his wing was an experience :)

:( Well, I guess Rosie just wasn't meant to be. Amazons are strange little birds though, and VERY different in personalities than toos'. I'm sure the right zon will come along though. There are friendly ones out there, you just have to stumble across one:)

Rosie is friendly enough actually, he doesn't usually bite, first time he bite me since we met, think he was just putting an exclamation point on the statement that he did not want to be an only Zon :)

The oddball is really friendly when he's with his gang, then he is a much more outgoing guy. So of course, I asked hubby about adopting him and a couple of his friends, but I only got 'the look'....

I am sorry that Rosie didn't warm up to you. I do think Amazon's are a bird that need's to choose their person.
I had a YN for 15 yrs when I was younger, he was guessed at being over 30 when I met him. He instantly loved me, he hated everyone else. My breeder friend ended up giving him to me because he literally attacked any one else who got near him. With me he instantly tried to feed me, talked to me and didn't want to get off me.

I even had to learn to cut his toe nails by myself, I would hold him in a towel with my feet and clip him, no one else would or could help he would try to bite them and me if I got someone else to try and help.

His previous life was unknown to me except at one time he was around a new born and could cry just like one. The worst was a battered woman, he would beg in a woman's voice not to be hit again. It was heart wrenching. Before me he was kept in a tiny cage and only fed seed. He died of liver damage from all the years of bad diet. I gave him as much love and good food and toys those final years...I miss him everyday.

I am certain that the right Zon will choose you, and you will know it's right!

I completely agree with you... and your Zon's story is heartbreaking to know what he saw in life before finding you. Sorry he died young, but I would bet he forgot his past and truly every second of his 15 years with you. Sure he is hanging out watching somewhere still waiting for that day eventually when you find him again!

know not allowed to get into religion or that type of conversation, but I do believe that there are certain people / animals / spirits that we have known for many lives. So if you are ever in a situation where you come across a bird or other animal and they just instantly make you think of your beloved Zon or you feel like he's back with you, listen to that voice. I believe that in a lifetime they can return to us... but that's probably way more religion talk then is normally allowed, so I'll go off to the corner and punish myself... no reprimands needed :)

I'm sorry things didn't work out with Rosie, but it's good that he's already in a good situation and doesn't really *need* rescuing until something better comes along:)
Labell, I really enjoyed reading your story and just wanted to point out what a big loving heart you have. :)
and Jen: I'm sure the right zon will come along! Whether it be Paco or the new girl, or someone totally different!
Or, yknow, Tori can just take home the B&G.. That's fine too. :)

I would LOVE another Zon but I worry about the feather dust. I am working very hard at detoxing and eating mostly a raw vegetarian diet, no gluten, no dairy. I believe that everything can be cured through diet no matter what my stupid doctor says and if that ever happens I will look for another rescue Zon. I love all the posts and video's here but they always make me miss my dear Karma. That was his name because I believed it was fate that we found each other. He accepted and said his new name right away, like he knew it was fate too.

His old name was Ralph, he never said it after coming to live with me.

That is VERY possible.. but, if I'm not delirious enough to think that a military macaw in an apartment is an OK thing- then I think I'm okay, atleast for now. :54:
Teasing or not, I probably do need a nap..

Jen, I am so sorry it didn't work out with Rosie, but at least you know now with no more waiting and wondering. It sounds like you are going to have 2 really good choices this week - good luck with deciding between them!
Can't wait to hear all about the new girl coming into the rescue, and also more about Paco:)

BTW, I loved what you said above:)

Thanks for sharing this. I'm sorry to hear that someone your heart tugs to says no, but it's great to see understanding like you have. I'm new and have an amazon as of last Saturday, between 10 - 20. He took to me immediately, he's ok with my husband in the morning and was just mean to my sister with their first meeting. I worried about mine but not as much as my husband who's afraid of getting bitten. I hope you find one that attaches to you quickly, best of luck and wishes.

Truly believe there are certain animals meant to come into our lives... Karma was a perfect name :)

Weird as it sounds, Folger is that with Victoria, tho think it may be reverse in that situation, he was waiting for her...

Now see, THIS is why I appreciate the people on this forum so much!! Yes, we all wanted you to adopt Rosie but none of us will hold it against you if you decide against it because it may not be the right solution for HIM. Well done, Jen! If Rosie prefers the shelter because his friends are all there, then that is where he would be happier and that is where he should stay. Kudo's to the shelter operators too for suspecting that but allowing you to at least try.

Lucky for us, you and Tori help out at the shelter and we can still get updates on Rosie!

BTW - when Mr Percy is in one of his 'moods' he will also take treats (and anything else) from me and toss it to the floor with such disgust that I have to giggle :)
