a flying Zack

The other day, Zack was on top of his cage and decided to fly at (or maybe to?) me. Since the last two times he did this, a couple of months ago, he bit me several times. This time I ducked and he landed on the floor. He wasn't happy about this.

My question is: do you let your birds fly to you? I would like to get to the point where Zack will do it, just gotta remember not to duck I guess.

Yup! Out of 7 birds, 3 of mine will willingly fly to me without food being a motivator. If food is involved, I could potentially bump that up to 6!

Casey, my first tiel, plus my two conures Charlie and Jayde will fly to me. Casey is "trained" to fly to my hand for scritches, but she also flies to me to hang out with me (and consequently demand her scritches! ). Both conures fly to me because they want to be with me.


They land on my hands, arms, shoulders and head. I actually encourage the conures to fly to me because that's how they get their exercise!

My BFA didn't fly to me. She friggin launched! I didn't even get both feet in the door... But she didn't attack me. Just stuck her head in my eye socket for an extended head scratch.

I had three conures, two amazons and a macaw that did.

Yours, frankly, sounds hormonal and territorial at the moment...

Did she attack and bite? Or did she just grab ahold of something to steady herself because she didn't quite stick the landing?!

TWO entirely different scenarios, with two entirely different sets of advice.

He definetly attacked the first two times but that was a couple of months ago when he would still bite me when I stuck a finger into his cage. He has calmed down a lot since then He only bites (a hard beaking really) when I do something he doesn't like, such as petting his wings when he doesn't want me to. Or when he is ticked as when he landed in the floor and I tried to comfort him. Ten minutes later he had climbed back up to the top of the cage and we were buddy's again.

Not sure what his intentions were this time. My mom, who has been here since last Jan., left saturday so he is having to deal with being alone when I go to work now. So this may have been due to that.

Speaking only for myself, I would allow it.

My BFA was my most bonded bird. And launching herself to my shoulder the minute I walked in the door was just part of the "greeting" process.

Yes, let him. It's part of the fun. If you anticipate it, hold out your hand/finger and he will land on it.

My Sam has the tendency to fly right onto my....my...girl parts and park his hiney right there for some lovin'. He's NEVER attacked me and is quite the clown, so I have zero issues with him "visiting" me, in fact I love it.

Both my big macs fly to me, too...now THAT can be a bit overwhelming, especially if I'm not expecting it. :54:

I let my birds fly to me. Ivory my mothers cockatoo I will duck half the time because she can get a little bit annoying about stealing what I am doing or taking my food....

My one conure Monkey will fly after me all the time. And Loki will sometimes try but he is still half clipped. Monster will follow Monkey...

My female cockatiels will sometimes fly to me. My boy tiels want me to go away half the time.

My cockatoo Folger doesn't really have the guts to follow me room to room. He will call for me to come back a lot or walk to the object that is closest to me.

I would let your amazon land on you and see what he does! Maybe he just wanted to be with you and not take a chunk out of your face I would put your arm/hand out for him to land on just to be safe that first time...

My BFA usually only flies to attack my mum, I hope this isn't the case with zac!! Sometimes it's hard taking that bravery pill to actually find out hey!!!

I wish my bird had other motives to want to fly to someone lol!!

My DYH flies toy shoulder all the time. If your worried though extend your arm as a perch and see if he lands there.

My conure will fly to stranger who enters (only the people she doesn't like) her house and attack the back of their necks if I don't intervene. Particularly any stranger who is taller than the people in her house enters her house, she will attack to draw blood. She doesn't know her own size!

Other than that she is a velcro bird. There is no need to entice her with food or scratch to get her to fly to us.

I'm a firm believer that my birds know people (based off a first encounter, anyway) much better than I do, it's a matter of perception really.
My conure, Kiwi, has only ever flown to one person(other than Brad and I, whom she loves dearly.) and it was to attack. It was a girl my friend brought over, we were not expecting her nor have we ever met her, but Kiwi kept flying to her shoulder/the back of her hood and displaying(puffed feathers, tail flicking, angry mumbling) and I actually had to put her in her cage because she would fly back to her every time I set her down!!
Of course the girl thought it was adorable and kept saying she wants a bird, and though I held my tongue, in my head I kept saying "You don't want a bird.. I don't want you to have a bird.. she's trying to eat your face. There's something about you and she doesn't like it."
But hey, I'm sort of mean to strangers, let alone women.. :54:
So of course after that visit was over I informed my friend that he was not to bring her over to my apartment anymore, if Kiwi doesn't trust somebody, neither do I. It was so weird seeing her be so vicious.. she's never like that!!

my BFA flies all the time to me...seems that the only thing he/she wants is to perch on my shoulder...especially when i am eating, there is no ay to stop him/her not coming over for food...
