A 'new' mutation

Well, for me at least! I have never heard of this mutation before (hey, I'm Australian, we don't have any interesting mutations here), but I think it looks just stunning!

It's a blue mutation of the yellow-naped amazon.
Apparently it's still quite uncommon (and hence expensive), but what a handsome bird.

I hadn't heard of them until I started looking up the blue mutation but yes they're gorgeous too, such a nice colour combination

I love them, too!

At least we can say that the blue mutation yellow naped amazons started from wild caught parrots! In fact, I think all blue mutations in the amazon species may have started from wild caught birds! So no inbreeding was required to produce the mutations within captivity!

Stunning looking birds. I've seen the blue mutations before but the red blue front :O sooo pretty.
I've never been a fan of the yellow mutations tho.

Gorgeous. I love how it's really a "true" blue. The blue mutations of some species don't come out such a clean nice shade as that one!

I wonder if they even sell them as hand fed "pets"? Or if they're still SO rare they're just breeding at this time to get more of them?

Haha pink is a little harder, genetically

I'm sure some inbreeding was still involved - after all only two unrelated birds were found in the wild, so surely once they bred their offspring would have had to breed with each other. But the same can be said for almost all mutations, I suppose.

Pictures don't do them justice, you really need to see them up close. All of the blue mutation napes came from 2 wild nest. Only Howard Voren has breeder birds from each nest. The key is breeding the few "blue" back to normal birds to strenghten the gene pool. That's the birds i'm buying as breeders (split to blue). Yes you can buy pet quality blue mutation nape babies,(some years). I'd be careful of where/whom i bought them from.do your homework. I could get you a baby for about 12K if any are available.

he swears the blue napes are larger,smarter, and talk better than the normal napes. I know the pairs i've been around are VERY outgoing napes,and vocal.

Hm, somehow if I had an extra 12k just laying around...I still think I'd have to pass and just admire.

I'll be seeing them soon, I'm visiting a friend in Germany who breeds them, which is how I found out about them in the first place!

Nooooo way I'd be able to get one into Australia though

Now that is ugly. They took a beautiful majestic bird and made it an ugly duckling.

Yes maam, he lets me drool around his aviaries sometimes. Some times the nursery, if there's not a lot of babies. And he gives great advice about birds. I woke him up at 11pm and he helped me out of an emergency. Got his Vet to call me back in the middle of the night. 1st class guy. If you want to know anything about your bird,he's the man. New World parrots anyway. It's the only thing he's done since college and he's my age.LOL I'm sure his website voren.com still has some articles about him on it. If you want some insight as why your parrot is the way he is,read some of his articles and talks(speeches). He's the guy parrot imports hired to travel to the export country and improve survival rates of exported parrots. He had to learn every thing about that species,food ,social patterns,everything. From the indians who where trapping them. That's where he found the color mutations and was able to build his flock. He's all about genetics and breeding 4=5 generation amazons and macaws.
