Parrot wont stop eating

She's one year old and is always eating. Is this normal?

Who is she? What kind of parrot and where did you get the bird? We need more info. please.

She's some sort of amazon, right? (If I remember correctly)

I honestly don't really know if it is normal, my boys eat very often too. I don't think I would call it 'always' though. Maybe try watching her closely, she could just be playing with the food. Sunshine likes to take some food and play with it in his beak, roll it into a ball (if it's a vegetable), and then spit it out. LOL

She's Sweetpea, the Blue Fronted Amazon. I got her in the Amazon rain forest while hunting Rhino.

How long have you had her? My parrot loves to eat but eats more when Im busy that day and dont spend as much time as I usually do or its time to change his toys. The reason SB wants info and background on Sweetpea is because it helps us to help you. What are you feeding? Pellets? seed? fruit? veg? How much are you feeding per day? Did the person you got Sweetpea from mention anything in particular about her diet or give any specifications on what food she must eat. All this info is important when looking at a situation that worries you. Im from South Africa and we have alot of internal parasites and my parrot gets dewormed regularly - it might not be the same in your country. I also found that I was cutting Hugo's fruit and veg too big and with trial and error found that he was wasting and spent ages over his bowl. I started grating and chopping his food and there was an improvement. Was Sweetpea eating alot before or after you took her to a regular vet check - up? if your very worried you could give your vet a call and ask them their advice. Hope this helps

Well, I cannot afford luxury pellets, so I alternate. One day it is veggies. The next day, it is Kaytee parrot food, which looks like a bunch of seeds, and to this I also add veggies.

I was wondering if it ok to expose the bird to food say 3 times a day for about an half hour, and just take it away the rest of the time.

I have noticed that if i take the food away, she goes to the bottom to look for food. She is a little piglet. She is not fat , but healthy looking. She is a happy bird. I have exposed her to Coloratura opera, and she is a regular opera singer.

Oh, I have had her for about a year I guess.

I you can't afford luxury pellets, then keep those veggies coming and consider buying a small bag of pellets to add to the seed. I've heard of this before and it turned out just fine. That does not make it ideal, however.

I know they're not parrots but...I put liquid vitamin in my zebra finches' seed because they weren't raised on veggies. I noticed in about a week, the feather quality increased quite a bit. That just shows you how incomplete a seed diet is.

There are good brands of pellets on the market that are not expensive. I found that I was going through a bag of seed mix a month then when I changed to pellets its every 2-3 months. I save money by using pellets...shop around and check out the prices. Are you feeding the right quantity according to Sweetpea's size? I thought I was feeding the correct balance but my vet gave the measurements and I realised I was under feeding. Is there alot of sunflower in the mix? Hugo used to gorge himself on sunflowers. I give him his ration of pellets in the morning and then give him his fruit/veg at tea time. I take out the fruit/veg late afternoon. Wildheart posted a thread about what to feed and I posted a list of food e.g. veg/fruit that they should get. My vet gave it to me. You can alternate and adjust according to what your eating.

Great info. I used to fill a bowl with the Kaytee stuff and let her go at it all day, but now I ration everything. I just eyeball, it with an abundance of greens.

I had a Yellow-crowned Amazon for many years, and he was a regular glutton. He would have eaten non-stop if I'd let him, so it was necessary to control how much food he was allowed to eat. His veterinarian recommended feeding more vegetables, and not making food available all the time.

Yea, I am going to put mine on a diet. Three feedings a day for 1/2 hour each, and that is it. She is a little glutton too.

There was a time when Mishka (AG) would also not stop eating.
Her eyes were bigger than her stomach. She was eating her pellets, fresh fruit, veggies and nuts.
A lot of the pellets become her "new toys" chucking them all over the place.
I gave her less pellets and nuts, balanced it out properly.
Dailey she gets her cereal in the morning, a few nuts at 10am, fresh fruit 12pm then I leave pellets in her bowl for the remainder of the afternoon. At 5pm she gets fresh veggies, with a bit of yoghurt.
For treats, when training her, she gets plain unsalted popcorn, which she just loves.
