Hello Everyone,

I happened upon this wonderful place today while I was trying to learn every possible thing about my new BFA, Obi. He is 4 months old and I bought him on Saturday from a local store that sells many exotic birds.

I work from home full time and wanted a companion while I do my IT magic.
I look forward to being part of the community and being the best owner and bonding with my new BFF.

Welcome to the forum, so glad you've decided to join us. :)

What a cutie pie you got there! :D May I ever so gently recommend you replace the dowel with a natural perch? Natural perches are much gentler on the feet and won't cause any sores on Obi's tender footies. :)

Thanks for the info on the perch. I will definitely get him some natural wood perches here in a couple of days.

So Obi and I where playing a game tonight before bed. Today is the first day he has started climbing around his cage and after us talking for about 30 minutes tonight he just climbed right to the playtop of his cage. After that I would say "Up" and he would step on my finger. I would hold him for about 15 seconds then let him reach back down. He would do a lap around the top of the playtop then come back to the same spot rinse and repeat about 20 times.
one of the times he managed to do this and I thought I would share.

Lol love the pic and welcome. I work from home, IT too. Get ready, your new Buddy may become famous. Mine has joined conference calls, uninvited, lol but people get a laugh out of it. I have to be in his site otherwise he starts calling so he's close by but he loves to say hello when he hears other voices. For the most part he's quiet (not screaming) or going to town on his favorite toy so he's not very disruptive. He will definitely keep you company. Congrats!

He is very cute! Love the split's picture. How old is Obi?

I have one small thing to add, with Amazon's since they are rambunctious at play it can be dangerous to have a feeder bowl out and that permanent ring there without the bowl in it. I once had my old guy (rescued nape) get stuck, it was not pleasant for him nor my hands getting him unstuck. I was grateful I was home when it happen though.

Thanks for the heads up about the ring.

I was told at the pet store that Obi is 4 months old. I did however notice today that he does not have have a band around his leg. I did not notice when I purchased him because I was so excited.... Does anyone know if this is a bad thing or not?

My baby Yellow Nape MeMe doesn't have one either, frankly with an amazon I am okay with it, less likely for them to get it caught in a toy.

From what others have said in other threads it's a good thing not to have the band. When I take Buddy to the vet I'm going to have his band removed. Others have said that some birds have lost toes a even feet do to accidents where the ring gets caught on something and the bird can't get free. Again Obi is such a cutie.

Obi is adorable! He is definitely a baby, he just has that "look" about him. No question he is under a year. He also appears to be the less common subspecies of blue front (Amazona aestiva aestiva, aka the Brazilian Blue Front), or at least a intermediate (one parent was), which is kind of neat since you don't see young ones very often:) More blue, less yellow and a smaller size.

Having a band is just one more potential hazard, and most people have them removed by the vet anyways. If you are concerned about identifying Obi (like if he gets lost or proof of ownership), then the vet can microchip him, which is MUCH safer than a band. He should be seeing a vet soon anyways, just for a general health checkup since he is a new bird and also if you have any questions for the vet its a good opportunity to ask a professional (like about diet or particular behaviors). Best of luck with your new buddy!
