Boys and Girls.

How do you guys handle males and females of the same Genus (not species) in the same room? I'm not interested in breeding, let alone messing with the ethics of cross breeding. I have a female Red Lored Amazon, female White Bellied Caique and am about to add a male Yellow Lored Amazon. I'm not concerned with the Caique, but am curious to know what your experiences have been with like Genus'. All are under a year old, so hopefully I won't be dealing with any real sexual maturity issues for a couple of years. Thank you much, in advance.

Lucy (DYH) and Barney (GCA) are my parents male and female zons. They have been together for the past 40 years. They are a closely bonded pair, but haven't ever mated (not sure they could produce viable eggs even if they tried). They are allowed to hang out together during the day without constant supervision. But they have to sleep and eat in separate cages that are side-by-side because the female is the "dominant" one and will steal the males food/kick him off the perch at night.

All birds are different, and they all interact differently. You will have to kind of wait and see on that. In general though, unless they are a breeding pair, they should have their own cages and should be VERY closely supervised until you can be sure they can "play nice" together. Even Lucy and Barney get in occasional "fights". They never harm each other, but if one preens the other too hard or something, they will nip each other:11:

Just as April (Kiwibird) pointed out, always keep a close eye on them until you know with certainty the two of them like each other.

I have a hen YN and a male DYH, and don't have any issues. They love spending time together on the Java trees. They preen each other, play tug of war, eat from the same bowl while on the play tree, etc. But they are housed in separate cages.

I lost a male DYH several years ago, and my hen DID have the hots for him during breeding season. During that time I didn't let them interact on the same trees at the same time, as I didn't want "it" to happen. :54: Outside of breeding season they were fine with each other. Again, they were never housed in the same cage.

Thank you. Yes. Two separate cages along same wall, but on opposite sides of it. The Amazons will have the White Bellied Caique between them and some tall house plants, too. It's a pretty convenient set up with a lot of linear space, so none of the three will be eyeball to eyeball when caged - so to speak. Currently, the Red Lored and Caique get along very well when out together. Thank you, again. Your expertise helps.
