Jasper yellow naped, new cage. ;)

Jasper seems well, today I found an awesome antique bird cage for him, since he was in a small one when I got him. Once I cleaned and transfered his things, haven't got toys yet since he still settling, though he likes the ropes I make for him, and a bell that doesn't ding lol. After transfer to his bigger cage he started showing me territory behavior, didn't even want to come to my hand with the glove, but he would let me pet his neck only.

I can't really tell from your photos, but I'm afraid I don't think this is the best cage for your parrot. In general, it is better for your cage to be wide, rather than tall. Also, you say the cage is "antique," but that means that it could have paint or other coating that could hurt your parrot. It also could have housed a parrot that died from an infectious disease. Moreover, it is difficult to see where he is supposed to sit in order to access his foot and water. Is there a permanent, small, bar running across the cage from cup to cup? It doesn't look wide enough to be comfortable. Finally, I've read in several places that, psychologically, parrots have a difficult time with round cages--they find it less stressful to have corners to "hide" in.

I understand you are trying hard and want to do your best--otherwise you wouldn't be here! But I would strongly suggest that you consider another cage for your new friend. Here are a couple that aren't too expensive, but would be a much better fit:

His cage is always open to access the aviary room. People have their own opinions, yes only one bar lol, there's several perches by those bars to make for it, and no paint or any reisdue was found. I am not even finished with working on making him toys, just that he was in or kept in a small cage before I got him, and he totally enjoys this one. This tall big cage is actually perfect for him for now, there are no diseases or other birds been in it for a while, I also disenfect as well, I did my research, its about what the bird and you likes!!! Thanks for the advice though.

I mean this as nicely as possible, but I really agree with what sam4life said. I understand that this cage is an improvement over the old one but it still might not be optimal. My Amazon who has a tall cage hardly ever goes into the bottom half of his cage. Fortunately, his cage is both wide and tall, so he has plenty of area to move around in. If your Amazon is like mine and mostly hangs out on top, he really doesn't have much room at all. Please just bear that in mind going forward in case it becomes a problem.

I'm in agreement with the others. That bar that spans the width of the cage is not good for a birds feet. The cage top is an ideal place to get a foot or otherwise caught if the bird were to stick a part of his body through and then climb up and get stuck. Many people also say that birds prefer corners to hide in, and a round cage has no corners.

Personally, I think the cage would be better used as a plant cage or as a chandelier.

That cage is no where near wide enough- can he flap his wings without hitting the bars?? I highly suggest you get a larger, more spacious cage for him regardless if there's an aviary room for him.

OMG!! Didn't realize a chandelier looking part... Err I spent money on this cage yikes, I kinda feel bad now, not entirely sure but Jasper doesnt like the bar going across his cage, he has a huge calcium perch and few other ones going in odd directions, he uses those, and even shaperens his beak on the perch. As far were the food containers were he got on those perches to eat and drink. I am a bit confused now where to keep him now until I budget for a bigger cage. His other one was square iron conure cage, but I thought it was way too small. It was only like 2.5ft tall I think, and top opens. It is also about 2.5ft wide... Any other suggestions until I get a better cage?

I would try looking on craigslist- I'm sure you could find a decent one for cheap! [emoji4] I've seen plenty of good cages on there (in my area) that I dream of snatching up.

I truly, honestly believe Jasper will be happier in the conure cage than in this chandelier (I LOVE that term, thanks Monica...it's the truth, too).

Once you have sufficient funds, then you can get him a roomier (NOT round) cage.

L- I see you've been convinced and that is good. My concern would be the metal it is made from since it is an antique -- sure to be lead in there somewhere. Sorry we had to rain on your parade. I know you were well-intentioned when you made the purchase, but I'm sure you rather hear the truth and be able to keep your little one safe.

Hey you made an effort and that counts. Definitely check craigslist, and green sheet. I got mine at a flea market so check them out and I bought mine new, never used. When I got it home, I washed it before getting it set up. I'm very pleased with it, it's nice so you can find nice things at a reasonable price. Here's a pic. He only goes to the bottom if he wants to get the dogs started.

Yes it was a mistake I bought it, but it didn't cost too much I'd say $70.00 is better than having my new friend Jasper die from poisoning...., so I started to think, tried getting him out of the tall round cage, he got very upset! Only thing I see from the cage that is potional danger maybe is the little rust spot on the bottom. The metal perch that is in the center, I covered it up with two of the big perches so he doesn't go on it, is this why, he won't come out now lol! So I then put his old cage the conure one beside it and put his food dish in there left the cage open so he will hopefully return to the other cage, even though its small, but I need get him back in, and make a play area on top of it for now and keep it open in the avairy, and hopefully to get him more comfortable until I find a bigger one for him later. I'll use the chandler for decoration I guess lol.

I've thought about even not giving him a cage at all, though I hear there a debate about that as well.... But the aviary room is free from wires etc... I suppose he could and or will at some point tear up the wood around the window or door, but not sure if he would try such a thing since I've been trying to keep him busy except for nights, and I am mostly home except two days I work at zoo, and I do most school work at home.

I'm working on a play project. Here is a pic of what I'm making, with some help. I'm looking for a branch and scraps of wood to make the base. It's something to do and it should be cheap. Maybe find or make something like you are talking about. Now the fun part is getting him out. I've had Buddy just over 3 months and he is just now coming out. Before I could leave the cage door open and he'd just stare at me from inside the cage. Just wait, before you know it he'll be out checking things out.

That's what I've had in mind! Looked in stores nothing like that, I suppose I could take apart a nice desser chest that has no glue or residue, just the shelves broken and I haven't used it. It is made up of oak for sure. I did research about branches thanks to kiwi

L- I know my goal was 'no cage'. I have always worked to give my fids all the freedom possible. It took me years, but I now have turned the patio off our kitchen into an aviary. It is climate controlled and of course, free of electrical, ceiling fan and other dangers. I even have drainage in the floor and a water source so I can go out there and hose everything down. All my fids have a cage in case they want to go inside, but their cage door is always open. If you already have an aviary arrangement, I'd say your little Jasper is very fortunate. His small cage is probably a great hidey-hole right now and when he gets settled and wants to venture out he will have plenty of freedom to move around.
