So I've been reading through the forum and saw a post about cinnamon sticks...what a fun toy that would be! I was wondering if other spices would be a good idea too for Iris, like star anise? It's pretty and I love the smell. I was also thinking of getting some sun dried hot peppers too.

Anyone have any luck with these?

Mind you, she's not playing with anything right now, since we're in the scared/honeymoon phase, but I'm trying to prepare since she was described to me as quite a playful character, so I'd like to have a bunch of options for her. (And Phlox might like this too!)

haven't tried the cinnamon sticks, i did give everyone a few of the star anise "stars" and no one really enjoyed them. (made the cage smell better, LOL) They all love any type of dried peppers.

Natural air freshener at the very least then. :)

Though I have to say, that Amazon smell? I had NO IDEA. I want perfume, seriously. Someone should make this. Iris smells so good. I hope someday she'll trust me enough so I can bury my face in her head and get a really good whiff.

Kiwi LOVES star anise. I usually give him a star in his morning dish of food to freshen his breath;) He also likes playing with cinnamon sticks. Never shown much of an interest in hot peppers though. It's not a spice, but Kiwi REALLY loves those mini dried corn cobs (they have them in the bird aisle at petsmart). He will gnaw on one of those for a good week or 2 (he's not terribly destructive, I image most birds would rip them up in a few hours lol). Just keep trying Iris on different things to see what he preferences are. Don't buy too many of anything until you are sure she likes it though, or you may end up with a bunch of (insert rejected food here) you end up having to throw out.

The amazon smell is amazing. Whenever I catch a whiff, it's usually when Kiwi is happy. Theres not a whole lot of information on what the smell is/how they make it, but I *swear* they can deliberately release it when they're content:)

If Kiwi wouldn't eat my face off, I would love to bury my nose in his fluffy little neck and sniff lol (glad we're all bird lovers on here, because a 'normal' person would probably respond to that statement with shock and horror:eek:). I do love the scent of a happy zon...

Perhaps we need to start a support group for amazon huffers (AHA:52:)

I have hopes that eventually I might be able to get a good sniff, but for now I think I'll have the good sense to keep my nose intact.

I feel like I have ten million questions, but at least I think I have the sense to know that she's still adapting and I really don't think she's likely to stay this timid, quiet little creature, since she was not like that (at least not entirely) when I went to meet her. So...essentially my questions are moot until she really settles in and I settle down.

It's just weird, since I've been planning for my 'big bird' for years, but never really considered an Amazon until I found out about being in a will for one a few months ago and now...poof, there's this beautiful delicious smelling creature in my house and I feel like I'm starting from square one.

And now I've gone off topic. :)

A couple of questions. Can you use any store bought cinnamon sticks or is there something to watch out for? Also, where can you get star anise?

I am just talking about the regular store bought cinnamon sticks. Star Anise is usually in the spice isle in a good grocery store but I'm thinking of placing an order on Amazon.com, amusingly.
