Boo, Orange Winged Amazon
Hi All, I am new to this group and would like to ask for help. I have a parent raised Orange Winged Amazon I got him or her at 13 weeks old he/she is unsexed and called Boo and for sake of time I will refer to Boo as a him, I have had Boo now for about 3 weeks. I am trying to tame him so far I am able to feed treats through bars outside cage and inside cage does get a little grumpy and growl as such when hand is inside cage but this is not all the time and mostly if I leave hand inside cage after giving treat. I have also started target training with a clicker which goes well sometimes and other times doesn't as Boo wont do it. The problem I can see, which is worrying me Boo does not like my hand anywhere near him and runs away if I try to get him to step up or touch him at all. I have now 3 times had him out as I was told by another forum he should be having out of cage time. I don't feel these have gone well as I was under the impression I had to have control on getting Boo out and getting back in to make it fun and safe and he sees me as getting him a good thing. First time he stepped up onto wooden dowel as soon as out filed around like a loon crashed into window and carried on filing around like a loon I swiftly put him back. Second time came out again and sat on Java tree after filing around like a loon again but not so dramatic and not for as long. Anyway upon sitting on Java tree I managed to get him to step up onto hand an give treats when done this I also managed to tickle the back of his head an neck for a while a couple of times mind you most of this was with protest and after a while flew off so went back into cage. I have tried to get him out again on the dowel a couple of times without success as wont go near it now.........so last time he came out I targeted him to bottom of cage opened top put perch in and targeted to top of cage flew around a little not much left Boo too it for a while then tried to get him to step up onto my hand while outside I managed to get him on once and treated him but all went wrong as I moved he flew straight off, i tried again and he just protested and again wont and went to point wouldn't take a treat off me. What I would like to know is how shall I go about this? what parts I am doing at moment is right? what parts are wrong? what parts could be changed? and the time frame I am looking at..... am I just rushing things? any help would be appreciated :) thanking you all in advance for your time...................

I think that you may be expecting too much too soon...3 weeks is pretty good for where you are.....some birds may take up to 6 months to hand perch & his/her flying off when you move is probably that (s)he's not quite sure of the stability of your hand throughout the movements yet.

Take a look through YouTube, there is a multitude of Amazon and/or other parrot training videos on there and really any bird training videos will work.

At 3 weeks, (s)he's really still getting used to his/her new home.....

Good luck.....

Thank you both for replying I will take a look on you tube for taming I have looked however most of them seem to be for training an at the moment trying to do things inside the cage is very difficult even trying to get to stand on my hand is difficult as boo now prefers to go mental at my hand lol I will keep on with what I am doing an maybe not let him out for a while. I have had parrots before but they where all hand raised an my partner kept them when we split. Thank you for your time I appreciate any help I can get as I want to do right by Boo

I would highly recommend watching some of Barbara Heidenreich's videos/DVD's. One of the best ones of her DVD's (that has helped me the most) is the Parrot Behaviour and Training Live Workship. Worth the cost!
