Tucuman Owners?

OK so I have had JJ my Tucuman Amazon for about a month now and I am curious to hear from other Tucuman owners about their experience with this species.
JJ doesn't seem very active just likes to sit around a lot doesn't seem to care much for toys and hardly ever makes any noise. He seems healty and he is like a dog when it comes to eating he knows when we go to the kitchen and starts his purring and chattering is what i call it and gets excited. He will run around the top of his cage doing it too when we eat at the dinner table where he can see us it kinda funny just like a dog bumming from the table.
He is getting move chilled out about petting and is really starting to like having his head scratched and his pin feathers groomed. He just isn't as active as the other Amazons I have seen. He doesn't climb much or talk just a wolf whistle from time to time and only while he is preening himself I guess he thinks he is making himself look sexy!

So people who are familiar with their behavior I am wanting to hear from you!

Amazons can be natural perch potatoes. Hopefully some zon owners can speak up soon with suggestions on getting your zon to be more active.

Smaller zon species (Tucumans included) tend to be quieter birds overall than the bigger zons. As for being inactive, thats not a trait of amazons inherently, more a bird who has decided to be lazy:20: I would suggest trying different types of toys to find out what really interests him, as well as encouraging some foraging/self rewarding activities. Some trick training may also get his lazy tail off the perch and being more active too (not to mention strengthen your bond).

Tucumans are very few and far between- I think you're the only one here who currently has one; I had one, but he passed away 1 year ago.

Jackie was indeed a perch potato, but he didn't have many toys or much of an active life before coming home with us.

Over time, he did start opening up and exploring... I think if you just include him in as many activities with you as you can, introduce him to new objects, toys, etc and play with him it will help a lot.

Most of all, be patient...sometimes it can take weeks to months for them to do new things.

Well I try to include him in everything but he starts fretting with his wings kinda raised and dancing back and fourth pointing to his cage or his orbit. He loves to just chillax on those things other than twice a day he likes to sit on my arm and have me preen his head and neck or sit on my laptop screen while I am on the computer and chase the mouse pointer on the screen..lol It's kind of funny because I have a touch screen laptop and when he touches the mouse pointer it disappears and he thinks he ate it and starts moving his beak looking for it but its not there..lol

LOL! That's funny about the mouse pointer! Silly boy!

It sounds like he's not quite comfortable being away from his familiar areas.

Amazons are foodies, so sit close by with some (bird safe) snacks, like apple slices, and have a really good time eating them (while ignoring him) and I'm sure he'll be over in no time to see what delicious goody you're not sharing with him [emoji6]

Do that daily, and every day move your chair just a bit further from his cage/orbit and soon he will realize that it's fun (and rewarding!) to be elsewhere, and not just his cage.
