As not to hijack another thread I was discussing amazon size on;) I thought I would start a thread to post pics of your exceptionally large amazons! Not overweight birds, but the big healthy ones. I know theres a couple *GIANT* YNAs on here pushing 600grams and probably a couple DYHs and BFAs who could give a mealy and even some macaws (less the tail) a run for their money size-wise:52:.

Lucy the DYH is one of those "big birds". She was wild caught as an adult, is now well over 45 y/o and has remained a strong, active and healthy bird. She is an exceptionally strong and agile flier, and since the zons have free run all day of the entire house, she flies probably as much as her wild counterparts (and definitely does not "loose altitude" due to her size;)). While a "well built" lady at around 600grams (also note she is also probably around 15.5" long), she is ALL muscle and one of those birds who likes to be slightly fluffed at all times (making her appear even bigger than she actually is). That is another point those researching amazons need to consider, some like to be "sleeked back" most of the time like my Kiwi is and only fluff on occasion, while others like to be fluffed all the time, and only get sleeked back when their scared. Fluff can make a bird look 2x as big (and intimidating) as they actually are.

Kiwi is not a tiny boy, but Lucy even dwarfs him:eek:

(These pics were scanned, thus the poor quality)

Hoping everyone else will pitch in with their own pics of their big boys and girls so we can have a thread to kind of show the size variances you can have between healthy individuals of the "larger" amazon species:).

I cannot add to the "big boy" status, as my little guy is a bit on the smaller size for blue front amazons.

However, he has a clean bill of health, and the vet says his muscle condition is great. So, I'm ok with him being ~370 grams. lol!

It is always interesting to see just how much variation there is within a species!

What an absolute AWESOME thread idea, April!!! :D

I will have to dig up some photos.... photos to follow. :)

WOW, Lucy is HUGE, but I have to add that Kiwi is a VERY big boy, too.

Ya know, I think it's a girly thing with the 'fluffing' up, because my Hunter, more often than not, goes for the Fluffer Nutter look, while Sam really only fluffs up when he has an attitude problem. :54:

Mopar is adorable, even if he's on the smaller side;). He appears to be the aestiva aestiva subspecies, which tend to have more blue, less yellow and an overall smaller size:) Kiwi is a aestiva xanthopteryx, which have less blue, more yellow (especially on the wings) and a bigger overall size.

I'd say blue is a large amazon, I don't really know how heavy, I've never weighed her :/ but here she is sitting on my arm!!!

Wow, these were located in a folder titled "2006", that's why it took me quite a while to find them.

This is Quincy and Hunter. Hunter weighs around 620g, and Quincy weighed a bit over 700g at his heaviest (and he was never chubby/fat)

Quincy

Hunter (today)

And my Sam (he's SO much smaller than Quincy was. Sam only weighs 518g, and he's Quincy's full brother)

I do wonder if it's a female thing, the fluffing? I know your Hunter is quite a big YNA, but I haven't seen as many pics of Sam to judge his size. Is she bigger than him (I guess we'll see:))?

Kiwi is fairly large. He's about 420grams, but Lucy is a monster! I've actually never seen another DYH quite as big as she is. It's not even her weight or fluff as how long she is:11: An overall big girl! I think a lot of it is she grew up in the wild. She was caught and imported as a sexually mature adult to be bred, but my mom 'saved' her from that (breeding operations back then were NOT like they are today).

Edit: you posted your pics as I was typing this, but holy moly was Quincy a big boy! Now I have seen a bigger DYH than Lucy lol. I'll have to ask my mom what Lucy's weight was at her last vet visit, because I may be mistaken thinking she weighs 500grams. Hunter is a big girl too, but I think YNAs are the second largest amazons next to mealys aren't they? And poor little Sam:) Small, but still beautiful! Interesting that he came from the same parents as Quincy. Obviously though, all your zons are healthy birds. All of them fly a lot don't they? Theres a definite difference between "chunk" and muscle. Kiwi has even gotten a little broader with muscle since that pic of him next to Lucy was taken. The flapping exercises we do with him have beefed him up a lot;) He used to be pretty scrawny with no chest muscles:(

Looking at the pics so far, are BFAs a little bit more streamlined than the YNAs and DYHs do you think?

Here are Sam and Hunter next to each other. The perch slants slightly downwards, so Sam looks bigger than he actually is.

Blue looks of a similar size to Kiwi (and she is beautiful, I love BLUE FRONTS who have lots of blue on their fronts;)). A nice, big healthy female BFA. Best not let Kiwi see her:11: I personally weigh Kiwi on my digital kitchen scale. I'm sure it's not 100% precise like the vets, but for general monitoring purposes, it's fine. I set it up, have it zeroed out, set to grams and set him down on it. To keep him in one place, I ask for some kisses and slyly read his weight while he's distracted;)

Mojo YNA/BFA hybrid hatched 3/23/14 384 grams

Brady YNA age between 3 and 5yrs 525 grams (slightly over-weight) not bad but no muscle tone from horrible clip and cage confinement prior to coming to me.

Belle Yes! She finally has a name! DYH 9 to 10 yrs 625 grams (slightly over-weight) I realized after her bath today she is not quite as chunky as I first thought but still needs to lose some and mostly develop muscle tone. So many years stuck in a cage has left her without proper breast muscles.

Thank you. I was VERY lucky with her , I knew NOTHING about amazons/subspecies etc when I brought her , just a picture of what I wanted in my mind, I went to a breeder and there she was, in a cage, instant love. She came straight to me, I had 10mins with her and put a deposit down hahah. Lucky really as she attacks very one else in the house. She is defiantly MY baby. It's good seeing others amazons, get an idea of size etc.

Don't worry. Kiwi is very handsome too..... I won't show blue. She might not sleep tonight haha ;) :green:

I took a picture with Hunter on the scale. :54: (I tried with Sam, too, but he didn't stay on the scale long enough for me to take a photo)

So...this is the scale....at 0 grams

With Hunter

Firstly, Blue is drop dead gorgeous!!! (And her person isn't too shabby looking either :54:)

Hunter is a Yellow Nape, Matt. They can weigh anywhere from 350-600g (and some more...just ask our henpecked)

Mealies weigh anywhere from 540-700g, and I'm sure there are heftier ones out there. :)

I like the name Belle;) It suits that beautiful girl! I bet her and Brady will broaden and tighten as they gain muscle.

I wonder why the heck Mojo is so small and if he'll get any bigger as he matures?

WENDY- I wish I could get a pic of Kiwi on the scale, but he barely sits still long enough for it to register before running off. You sure have a nice setup there with the little perch. Poor Hunter though, no lady wants her weight made public like that:54::D

Sorry Wendy, didn't make myself clear.... I was wondering what hunters weight (being a YN) was compared to the so called heavy weight, the mealy. Seems like she exceeds them ;) hahaha.

Stop Wendy........ I'll blush :O

I am not sure with Mojo he is only about 5 months old so I am thinking he still has some growing to do but I think he is going to physically be closer in size to a small blue front than a yellow nape. He has the talking ability and clarity of a nape though, little blabber-mouth!:D

Ah, I asked my mom, and she said Lucy weighs closer to 600 grams, not 500. It seems the girls are weighing in at more than the boys overall! Wonder if that has to do with the fact they would naturally have to form and lay eggs or what?

Thanks! I think you are right; or he is a cross between the two, as he does seem to have quite a bit of yellow on his head. At least compared to the photos I've come across of aestevia aestevia. :) But as a baby, he had a full head of blue!

You all have such beautiful birds. love seeing them! :)
