Sherlock was readily stepping up and sitting with us with no issues at all. Won't let us touch him yet but hey no rush there. then out of the blue he won't step up and runs to the the far side of his cage when we put our hand up (he was hand shy but I thought we had worked passed that). He still readily takes treats from out hands and will step up from his play stand but no way no how from his cage. Anyway he's a work in progress and we enjoy his antics. Oh and he still thinks he's bigger than Oscar our Macaw.

What? A temperamental amazon? That's simply not possible:21:

In all seriousness, yes, virtually all amazons have their "temperamental" days. Being bi-polar is considered part of their "charm":) For the most part, you should ignore the behavior and he'll be friendly again soon. However, do make sure that he isn't only being defiant on or around his cage. That could have the potential of being cage aggression, which is a WHOLE other problem besides normal, healthy amazon craziness....

Ummm...yes;)...lol. I don't know about ALL amazons, but speaking for my own, she can be a little stinker:09: Then again my little sun conure has his moody moments too:rolleyes:. Hopefully your zon is just having a bad day and will get over it soon.

Hope it's Ok if I partake in this thread!

I have a YNA who is a whack job. He doesn't want to be taken out of his cage. He wants us to open the door, and he will climb out himself, thank you very much. He will then allow you to give him scritches.... Or maybe he won't, depending upon how he is feeling, or some other factor, un beknownst to me. Then he may, or most likely will not step up. He will more likely than not make me ask him at least 5 or maybe ten times to step up onto my outstretched hand. Most days, I will have to leave the room, and return several times to further suggest that he step up and come out with me to enjoy morning Birdy madness. Sometimes after four or five times, he will agree, and sometimes I will have to resort to leaning over him, or cornering him, or I can send my mom or my boyfriend in, and he will often step up for them at the first request.... Just to spite me, I am sure.
Boom Boom (YNA) is clicker trained, and knows about 6 tricks. He also loves to sing and dance, and we have Birdy rock out time every day together. ..... But god forbid I should ask him to step off his outside perch. Or off his perch in the aviary. I don't get it. He plays with me, let's me give him scritches, LOVES night time tickles and going for walks......he just HATES stepping up. What gives? Amazon attitude?

Your post made me think of him. I hope it's OK if I asked on your thread :)

I think it helps to remember that they can have good and bad days and good/bad moods just like people, too.

I wonder if its because I'm sort of temperamental myself, but Iris the BFA doesn't seem anymore moody than any of my other birds. Phlox and Finn are probably the most stubborn honestly, far more than Iris. However, she's only been with me for a two months, so who knows, she could go crazy any time now. ;)

Yeah those Amazons are emotional yoyos. Up down. Up down. Sometimes I think with Amazons less is more. Give them space and wait for them to come around to you.

That's because your having him step up to do what you want, not to do what he wants. Don't push your affections on him, Don't make "step up" mean i'm taking you to do what i want. Have some respect for him. Try and see the world though his eyes.
