Rehoming fee for young Amazon?

My family and I recently rescued a yellow shouldered Amazon baby that we cannot keep. We have him only because there was nowhere else for him to go. We love him, but I have two lovebirds already and a flock of other animals. He screams from loneliness when we leave the room he's in--I have started bell training him, but the matter is that between work and school we do not have time to give this baby the attention he DESERVES.

Aside from lonely screeching, he is a wonderful bird. He allows pets on his back and neck, and will kindly accept a smooch on his beak without threatening to bite. He has not bitten any of us, despite us being complete strangers to him. He makes it known if we're invading his space, but never with any severe aggression. He dances and steps up and knows how to stay on a perch without flying away. When you're in the room with him he is very quiet and doesn't scream or make a lot of sound at all, just warbles to himself a bit. I have not experimented with tricks--not enough trust between us--but behaviourally, he is a very polite baby. This is a bird I'd keep in a heartbeat if I could provide for him what he needs. Unfortunately, I can't.

I'm looking to find him a forever home, and I know all the horror stories of people who search for free exotics and then abuse them. I want simply to know of a fair rehoming price for a well-trained young yellow-shouldered Amazon, no more and no less. We plan on donating the money to a shelter, not even keeping it for ourselves. I will not give him away for free, but I am not looking to make a profit off this animal.

I've looked at pricing for Amazons but they seem to be all over the place. I've seen yellow ~ Amazons priced at 1600 and 350, and I have no experience with buying or selling this species of bird, so I can't estimate which is truer to the standard buying price. Anyone experienced in pricing Amazons would be appreciated.

I'm trying to mark him down by several hundred dollars off a regular purchase fee, while not dropping the rehoming fee so low that he could be snatched up by a predator or a hoarder. Any money I charge is only for his safety in finding a responsible home.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Depends on where you are ? Here in Fla ,that's a 300$ bird. In Australia , it's worth about 3,000. I hope you can find someone here to help you out. Thanks for looking for a good home.

I live in Chicago, and they range from 400-1000, but I'm not sure for how much they really SELL. I'd try to find a FB page and rehome it to someone nice for a small fee, because usually people who stay a lot at home making their birds happy don't make much money. :)

Like I said, I'm not really looking to sell him. I'm just trying to find a rehoming fee that is affordable for a good owner but not so low as to attract predators.

Are you planning on rehoming him with the cage also? Here in Ohio I've seen Amazons go from anywhere between $300. up to $1000., however, some are with cages/playstands, etc., and some are without...and that was the asking price. Also, some are tame and some are NOT. Also, there are many different species of amazons so that might come into play too. I only paid $300 for mine, with her cage, but she was not handleable at all when I got her and she was in a deplorable/hoarding environment.

Good luck...I hope you find the best home for the bird. It's good that you are doing what is best for him.

I would list him as " If YOU are the perfect match for our bird, in lieu of a rehoming fee we will require a minimum of $350 [or whatever amount you decide] be donated to (your choice) avian shelter/sanctuary. Proof required to take bird. We just want this boy to find a loving home".

My suggestion is to send him home with his cage, and make the fee higher than the cage and every other item you send home with him, but lower than he could be sold for, say you have a $400 cage, perhaps ask $500 or $600 for all, that way the price is low for him, but too high for a flipper to be interested in?

Ponsoire, where are you located? What kind of Amazon is he? Do you have any photos of him? We currently have a 9year old DYH Male that we adopted earlier this year.

Eventually I will be looking for a amazon in the same genus as the yellow shoulder, yellow crown or Panama Amazon. At this time I am down to just my RFM and he is not use to being the only parrot. I am returning to the workforce so he will be alone anywhere from 9 to 10.5 hours a day depending on where the job is and what kind of commute I will have.

Sometimes I wonder if moving forward now would be the best chance for the best adjustment for everyone. I now have the room to quarantine but later that would be harder for me to do correctly. It is really hard for me to decide what is the best for all of us right now.

I do admire your willingness to do the best for your young amazon and the diligence you are doing to make sure you find the best possible home for the parrot.

When you decide on the rehome price for the donation if you have any more questions about how to move forward we have a sticky in the adoption/re-homing section called "Re-homing a bird". It has some really good information of how to move forward with your piece of mind and for the welfare of your amazon.

Although you are going to want to screen the potential interested parties closely you are going to want to give out as much information about the parrot as possible. You have a good start with your first post but are you going to include cage or just the parrot? What are the amazon's habits, dislikes, likes? Some bird prefer one gender over another, some have specific needs that have to be met. What kind of environment and or family is best for this particular parrot?

I do know what you are going though. There was a time when I felt I had to find my RFM Valentino a better home. I went though the same thing you are going though now. I had to evaluate what is best for Valentino. I have since decided to commit myself to my RFM to be able to keep him with me. In my transition he is included with all decision I am making at this time.

Please don't hesitate to ask us any questions or concerns you may have. This is a very good community and very supportive.

Here in cali you can get an amazon for 400 to 500 that's red fronted and other mexican species that get smuggled in. Yellow nape and blue fronted go from 800 to 1200. Whatever price you choose make sure you do a background history on the adopting family. I've seen amazons bounce from home to home because they didn't know what they were getting into. Or you could do what Sherlock's owner did and list him for say 600 get a background and feel for the person and when they come over and they seem like a good match give the guy for free. Of coarse that's just a suggestion if your worried about parrot flippers. Good luck in finding him a home!
