claw falling off

i got home today and started talking with boris and poncho and i thought it was time to start working with poncho (as it been three days since i got him and he has started talking and moving around acting calm ) as to get him to trust me . but just as i was putting boris in the cage so i could work with poncho i saw that poncho had one of the claws on his foot that didnt look right so with a closer look he had ripped the claw half way off . it wasnt bleeding so i pick him up and put a towel around him as i have found he is really calm in a towel and i didnt want to rip it off the rest of the way .. now in the walk to the table to check on it it fell off ,, there was no blood coming from it and he doesnt seam to be hurting from it .. is there anything i should be worried about any problems coming from it falling off

What kind of bird is he? If there is no blood on him, is there blood in his cage? I highly recommend taking him to see an Avian vet.

he /she havent had dna yet ,,is a orange winged amazon there is no blood anywhere . and poncho seams to be doing ok

Sounds like he probably just broke a nail, either while climbing or playing, he'll probably be fine. Do his other nails look healthy?

Can you upload pics of the foot & toe with the missing nail? If the nail body has just been broken off, the nail will grow out, but you may need to get an emery board & keep it shaped like a normal nail or Poncho may feel the difference in its shape and start chewing on it to remove it.....

If the nail was just broken, the nerve & blood supply will have receded back up into the rest of the nail, but you'll need to be careful when shaping the nail.....you'll probably need to work on it in weekly increments...letting it grow out, filing/shaping it, letting it grow out, filing/shaping it and so on, until it has grown out suitably.....

If the nail was broken/torn out of the nail bed, it will never regrow, but since it did not bleed, there should be no tissue damage.....

allee i just got poncho Saturday and i had to trim his nails due to they have not been taken care of in the past ,most of them had grown in a circle and where getting caught on the cage wire . i have trimmed a birds nails before and after i was done poncho was moving so much better. weco i have really looked at it and the nail was torn off from the toe right at where the nail comes out , at no point have i seen blood come from it but i know that there is blood that run to the nail so at some point i think he has got it caught and pulled on it hard enough to where the blood flow stop going to the nail . the spot where the nail was looks like a toe with no nail at all .

It could also be that he bled, and cleaned it up himself. When Flick lost her nail I was horrified to discover that she was drinking her own blood as she cleaned it off of her toe.

It's typically not a big deal. If possible, I would pour some peroxide over it and rinse it well tonight and tomorrow (they don't exactly watch what they stick a open wound in) to let a good scab form. Animals do lick wounds, but keep your eye out he doesn't chew it or cause more damage. 2 of my moms birds have missing talons. It doesn't affect them in any way (climbing, perching, landing ext...).

Greg, I'm sorry, I misunderstood, I assumed because there was no blood he had just broken off a part of the nail, I didn't realize he lost the entire nail. That must have been scary. It's great that Poncho trusts you enough to let you clip his nails and towel him. As Kiwibird said, I would clean the toe and keep an eye on it, just to make sure he doesn't chew it. It may be a little awkward for him, but I'm sure his feet feel much better now that his overgrown nails have been clipped. Bless you for taking these two beautiful birds and giving them a better life.

i have been checking to see if he has been chewing on it and so far he hasnt , poncho is a calm parrot i can do just about anything i want as long as i take it slow and be easy i have noticed boris watching and while i was checking on poncho foot boris had this look i had never seen him do before so i started talking with him and he was so calm , i can touch poncho and was doing that in front of boris letting him know it was alright and boris has let me touch him (thanks to poncho ) i have come to the conclusion that poncho is making a big difference in boris life which is great. i am thankfull for everyone response and this morning there is change in his toe it looks clean and doesnt seam to be a problem .

I'm happy to hear Poncho's toe is all right. I don't have Amazons but I am constantly amazed at the way my birds learn from each other, they seem to really enjoy each other's company. I think Poncho and Boris will be good friends.

Glad Poncho's toe is healing up well and that Boris let you touch him! Some parrots do well as single birds, but other really need a buddy. Glad you found one for Boris!
