Dragonfruit was on sale today and I had heard birds like it. I've never had one so of course I bought one and brought it home. I tried it while cutting it up, it's not bad, but I wouldn't buy it for myself again.

Served it on her little plate with her dinner. Glad I went back to the kitchen and didn't sit in my chair like I normally would have!

When I came back to sit in my chair there were 2 pieces of dragonfruit in it! And Sassy had jumped and ran to hide from the scary things that had hit her while she slept!

Any birds out there that do like it? Of course I will keep offering it until it's gone, she may decide it's edible!

Lol!!! She threw them onto your chair?! [emoji23]

I gave dragon fruit to chili a couple times- she doesn't care for it... [emoji57]

Good to know they can have dragon fruit! I was wondering if it was safe to feed Kiwi seeing as Winco has a rather nice selection of all kinds of interesting fruits right now (dragon being one of them). Sorry Zilla tried to sabotage your chair. She was obviously less than amused by the offensive fruit you offered!

Yes she threw them into my chair! Keep in mind my chair is a good 4 feet from her cage, but directly across the living room. I did step on another piece that didn't make it to the chair.

This bird has very good aim and usually gets at least fairly close to her target which is almost always Simon! How she LOVES to toss things at him!

If you do offer it to Kiwi run away so he can't throw it at you! :D

She may change her mind if I keep offering it for a couple days. She almost always tosses new foods she doesn't recognize off her plate. But usually will at least try it if I keep offering it for a few days.

I was a little surprised by how far she thew the dragonfruit though.

I don't know what a dragon fruit looks like, but coincidentally, I went to get a scented oil air freshener for my car today (the kind you clip on to the a/c vent). I picked out a dragon fruit one!! It smells great :D! Zilla probably wouldn't like it lol.

They are kind of strange looking. Dark pinkish/red and a bit bigger than a baseball, but more egg shaped and have leaf like things "pealing" off them all around??? I should have taken a pic, but now it's all skinned, cut up and in the fridge so I can give her more ammo tomorrow!

Oh, and the inside flesh is white with little black seeds all over, like polka dots. The texture is something like kiwi fruit.

It smelled really good so I thought it would taste like it smelled, but it didn't really have much flavor at all. not sweet, not sour, just there.

I'm curious now. I want to taste one. If I remember next time I'm at the store I'll have to pick one up. From your description I do recall seeing them. Do you eat the seeds since you say they're all over?

My birds love it, the problem is it stains their faces and makes them all look like man-eaters. Then in a few days they look like little piggies that eat mud...

They are super weird looking- the first time I saw one I thought what in the world?! And of course bought one....

The inside fruit reminds me of poppy seed muffins with the little black seeds everywhere.

They are very weird looking, almost like a flower trying to open from the bud stage!

And poppy seed muffin is the perfect description! Why didn't I think of that??? :54:

So true!!! And the skin is almost rubbery- very alien like lol [emoji51]

Hahha I think that's what I thought of when I first cut it open- like a white, squishy, poppy seed muffin lol

Alien like! Exactly! I hadn't thought of that either, I just thought "very weird, do I really want to try this? Or give it to Zilla? But I was very brave! I always try the things I give her (except her seed mix, just can't bring myself to try that)

She didn't seem to be any more impressed with it this morning than she was last night, but couldn't chuck it :D She eats her breakfast inside her cage so I can drink my coffee without her going crazy trying to get to it!

One thing her previous owners didn't lie about! She would do anything to get to coffee, soda, beer, wine, chips, and any other crap foods she shouldn't have!

COPY/PASTED from Wikipedia

To prepare a pitaya for consumption, the fruit is cut open to expose the flesh. The fruit's texture is sometimes likened to that of the kiwifruit because of its black, crunchy seeds. The flesh, which is eaten raw, is mildly sweet and low in calories. The seeds are eaten together with the flesh, have a nutty taste and are rich in lipids,[15] but they are indigestible unless chewed. The fruit is also converted into juice or wine, or used to flavour other beverages. The flowers can be eaten or steeped as tea. The skin is not eaten.

Taste
The mild taste of pitaya flesh is often remarked upon, as it stands in stark contrast to the vibrant exterior. The taste has been described as being "very bland... like a melon or kiwifruit," with a "mild sweetness."[18]
