Love between two parrots- Avian store trip with poppie

Was a nice spring day a couple days ago...so decided to Take Poppie ( My BFA) for a ride with me to the avian store as she enjoys picking out a toy.

The 17 mile trip in the truck on my shoulder is a big thrill for her as she coo's and asks "what's that? ""....quite fun.

Once at the Avian store there was a yellow headed amazon about 10 years old...quite a character he is. Immediately these two my Zon and this Zon made eyes and started chatting up a storm.... The other Zon " Zues" began by whistling and saying hello...hello. Poppie was on my shoulder and my wife picked up Zues and he began singing "Row row row your boat merrily down the stream....life is a dream.....well, that;s the verse he sang, and then poppie joined in with her opera singing to him....wow these two were just chatting and singing to each other...

The Avian store people asked...wow is that Poppie chatting up a storm with Zues?? I said yeah, but so is Zues....they said Zues chats, but never like that..... Was really special for these two.

Since coming back from store Poppie has been incredibly loveable to me and my wife....more than usual and more kisses.

You don't think she was thrilled to see Zues???

I think Zeus should have a new home with you! When are you going to fetch him?

Well, it's a combination of getting out and about, and seeing the other bird. Going on an adventure. I notice a huge difference in my bird's behavior when they get to come with on car rides. I've got three that absolutely love it.

I would love to take Zeus home.....unfortunately That Zon belongs to the Avian vet, And comes to the store everyday...keeps the other birds in check and greets people....well almost, if he doesn't like you you'll know it.

Poppie and Zeus were both owned by same owner for a while, before that owner suffered a severe medical condition. She and her husband (whom had a stroke) had some 25 birds, 17 of them Zons. They dedicated themselves to parrots and 24/7 training of them and bird shows.

Zeus was given to the vet by these people, and Poppie came to me. They have a vocabulary that I have never seen in thousands of Zon's. They are very well trained Zon's. I'm Blessed to have gotten Poppie. So that's how Poppie and Zeus know each other, and it surprises me that out of many birds, they can identify each other after a few years....that alone was a learning experience for me....so if the question ever comes up, can birds remember previous pal's?? yes they certainly can.

I have never seen more intelligent Zon's than in these two, I credit the previous owners as they trained these Zons very well. Sad that they had developed the medical condition....they traveled the Midwest in bird fairs and training seminars. They'll be sadly missed, but I'm blessed to have a Zon they trained....She (poppie) is one extremely intelligent bird.

Kiwi is always in a MUCH better mood after a trip out too. Especially to the farmers market where he gets free nuts and berries and tons of attention from strangers:32: I think most parrots love "adventures". Glad Poppie gets to go out with you!

I agree with you and Kiwi, birds love car rides and adventures.....my Grey went with last year to store, and while my wife was in store, my Grey sat on my shoulder wolf whistling at ladies in shorts as they walked by....(wasn't me, I swear !!!) And they'd take a double look and realize that the bird was whistling and not me....whew.... Could get slapped aside my noggin for that....lol.

They actually lived under the same owner several years ago.....I would love Zeus, but Avian vet that also owns store won't part with Zeus. But isn't it amazing that after all these years they remember each other?

No more amazing than you or I recognizing say, our roommate from College if you haven't seen him in a couple of years... and studies have shown that their memories are better than ours are.

Or in some cases, a brother or sister, if the bond was that close.

THEY ABSOLUTELY DO FORM ATTACHMENTS WITH OTHER BIRDS. Don't kid yourself. I've seen birds tear their feathers out in grief after being separated from their buddies, or a mate they've been with long term.

The idea that only humans love each other "that way" is human conceit...

Just because we sometimes have trouble telling one DYH from another DYH in a crowd, doesn't mean they do! The recognition factor is instant, and they light up a room when they see an old friend. (Or displacement bite the second they see an old enemy. They don't forget those either!)

My mom's DYH doesn't even need to see me. Lucy KNOWS when I'm on the phone and won't leave my mom alone when she's talking to me because she wants to be sure I hear her vocalizations LOUD AND CLEAR lol. She couldn't care less about anyone else on the phone. They're animals of higher intelligence and have complex social structures with strong emotional bonds just like us
