Hello all. We just rescued an Amazon, think it's an Orange wing, about 2 years old. Bad situation all around, they killed their Goffins. Long story short, I could have taken these birds last year but didn't. Hubby didn't want anymore birds, we already had 8...along w/five dogs, two fish a frog and hamster. Well, after the one was killed, there was no saying no, even Hubby knew that. I feel partially responsible, even though everyone keeps telling me I'm not. I knew the situation was bad, but thought it had gotten better.
Anyhow, Yoshi, the 'Zon is really a sweet bird, not too sure what a toy is though. And, honestly, we are 'Too people, seems 'Zons are a whole different animal! :D But, I will do what ever it takes for Yoshi to have a happy home. Is there any general advice you have that would be different than what we know about 'Toos (we have a Goffins, LSC and Rose Breasted)? We also have 2 Budgies, 1 Senegal, 1 Blue Quaker and 1 PFL. And any tips on getting him to quiet down that "strangled Goose sound" would be appreciated!

Hi Bobbie, and welcome to the forums, and THANK YOU for rescuing Yoshi. :) WOW, it really sounds like you got Yoshi out of his 'old' home in the nick of time if they 'killed' their Goffin. (That had to have been by accident...right?)

If you care to share a photo or two of Yoshi, we'll be able to tell you if he's indeed an OW Amazon. :)

How long have you had Yoshi now? It may take him some time to get used to his new home and new people (and pet friends), but hopefully in due time he'll be playing with his toys, and enjoying life. :)

Welcome to the forum and thanks for rescuing this precious bird! I'm sure Yoshi will be very happy with you, and in time, learn to play with toys. Amazons are GREAT parrots (I'm only a tad biased:54:) and I'm sure you'll love the zon personality:D The big difference with zons and toos is really that amazons are generally much more independent/less attention needy (not to say they don't love their human time). Many don't want to be petted, or only allow petting on their terms. They are also prone to obesity/overeating, so be careful to monitor his weight and that Yoshi is eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and his weight. One more thing, since you have a lot of dusty parrots (the cockatoos), if you haven't already, make sure you get a air filter going in the bird room before Yoshi joins the rest of the flock after quarantine. Amazons can have allergies to other parrots dust, so you'll want to keep that in check:)

Hello and Welcome, Bobbie! I'm glad you were able to take Yoshi out of an awful situation and give him a chance at a better life. Best of luck to you and Yoshi.

WELL DONE!!

We, too, have quite a few birds (only 9 in the flock at the moment, but that changes frequently), and every last one of 'em is a rescue. They all seem to know that their lives have been saved, and they love you all the more for it.

I don't know the details of Al's death, but I wouldn't call it an accident. At the very least, it was neglect, at the very worst it was outright murder.
I took some pic of Yoshi the other day, will figure out how to post them soon.
He's been w/us since last Wednesday. He does enjoy scritches and only wants to step out of the cage if he's on a certain perch. He did like the new fangled Pinata toy I got for him, so that's a start.
