My 16 year old rescued Amazon had a stroke yesterday.has anyone ever heard of this? Apparently it not uncommon in this breed.luckily I had a care credit card with money on it becuz his wellbeing is expensive.how do people do it without it. Doolie had X-rays,cbc work up,sub q fluid, and crop feelings..he's still in the hospital.the vet said to be hopeful, but I'm not.
Thanx for reading my post I just needed to share.

I am so sorry about Doolie:( None of my big birds have had strokes, but I had a budgie and a finch who did, and they both managed with some cage rearranging to help them get around.
Doolie is in my prayers, I hope he makes a full recovery.

How very sad. 16 is so young to have a stroke I hope he makes at least enough of a recovery to continue having a enjoyable life. His diet must have not be great to have this kind of health issue so young. :(

I am so sorry to hear about this:( My moms green cheek amazon had a stroke a couple years ago. He survived, but was paralyzed for several weeks on one side of his body and left with some permanent mobility issues (feet and wing just don't work as well as they should). He's still a perfectly happy bird though and has managed to adapt quite well:)

I think it's great you got him to the vet in time for him to receive treatment. I would expect he will soon be on the road to recovery. Parrots are very resilient creatures, especially the amazons!

I am so sorry to hear about your Amazon! You're an angel for taking him in when you did, and obviously so enriching his life, loving him so much!

I hope and pray he recovers, and still has a good quality of life! :)

I rescue, foster, and rehabilitate as many parrots as I can take in.

I want to strangle this child. This is why I cannot stand children. Only parrots. Good for you for helping Doolie. You are a wonderful person for helping him then as well as now. With luck, he will be okay. It is good sign that he is eating. That makes me happy.

That child should have been hit with a num chuck. Any child thT doesn't understand animals can be hurt and are fragile has no respect.

Thinking good thoughts for your dear little doolie! Keep us updated!

Harming animals in childhood is a indicator of antisocial behavior in adulthood. Little psychopath in the making right there, and mom and dad don't sound much better not even bothering to take a seriously injured animal to a vet:mad:

I am so sorry to here that happened to poor Doolie:( That absolutely breaks my heart. I am so glad he is with you now, where he will experience love and care.

My ex had children and it used to make me so nervous when they were at my place with my birds. One of the kids was wonderful, one of those people that animals love and was always respectful and gentle towards the birds.

The other two however were reckless and dumb with their behaviour. I cringed the day my ex brought them home budgies and sent them to their mom's house. I cried when I found out that they let their huge dog around the budgies and tried to bring them into the tub with them :( In my opinion, children should not have animals. It made me furious how irrational and dumb the kids could be, and how un-empathetic they were to the poor bird's feelings.

I say this but the little girl (who was only 6, and a different mom from the two boys) was indeed more loved by the birds than any of the rest of us! The birds just loved seeing her walk in the door. She even used to ask me if she could help clean the cages and change the food and water. In short I think it just depends on the kids. But you can never really know how a child will think and react, so why take the risk in the first place?

I am so so happy you took in this bird. He is in excellent hands with you. Thank you.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
I hope Doolie makes a full recovery from the stroke. Thank you for performing a magnificent gesture of rescue from a horrible situation. As others have posted, such barbarity at the hands of children is untenable as is the unconscionable lack of care by the "parents."
