Sammy's gone insane

We just adopted another rescue ("Takila", a blue-fronted Conure), but while Takila is a wonderful bird, our CAG and Sammy (in my avatar) have reacted extremely badly. Our CAG now hides in the back of his cage 24/7 & won't make a sound or interact with us in any way (which is strange, as Takila and our CAG have been best friends & flock-mates for the past 15 years, except for the past few months since we adopted our CAG), and Sammy has gone, well, insane.

This morning, I opened his cage as usual and, when I moved away, he flew at my face, attacking full force. Now, Sammy ONLY flies when it's a life-or-death emergency, so this was a complete shock. He got tangled up in some furniture legs on the floor and, when I went to rescue him, he attacked my forearm, biting deep, shaking hard, and not letting go. Drew blood through my denim sleeve & light jacket. I was eventually able to wrap him in a towel, but by the time I'd got him to the door of his cage, he'd bitten through several layers of bath towel. I had to toss the whole bundle into his cage & slam the door.

Now, if he so much as hears my voice, he flies into a rage, hurling himself at the cage walls to get at me. I've covered his cage completely, as I'm afraid he'll hurt himself.

We've moved the new bird out of the room, to where Sammy can't see or hear him, but Sammy hasn't calmed down one iota. The last time Sammy got angry at me (for going away for a week) it took 3 weeks before I could approach his cage to feed him (during that time we had to throw food into the cage, and poured water into a bowl from above), but that was NOTHING compared to this.

Has anyone else had this problem?!?

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
You never know how they will react to another bird...

My Red Lored amazon has had no less than 8 prior amazon flockmates, and she was best buds with all of them...

She and my lilac crowned are not. For what ever reason, it was instant dislike, and it hasn't let up in half a dozen years.

Nobody's attacking each other, but the clearly do not get along...

Since they were flock mates before, and got along, my guess is the raging amazon is what is upsetting your CAG...

A nape in "fit to kill" mode would tend to make you a little uneasy... it's a bit like having a crazy neighbor.

Being empathic, as they are, they pick up on that tension, and they act up too...

Thankfully, our CAG is coming around, and starting to behave normally.

Sammy the 'Zon, however, is as wild-eyed and violent as he was when this started. Like I said, he's gone from being a sweet, loving bird (and my best friend) to a rabid animal. He even goes crazy if he hears my voice. He's never liked my wife (views her as an competitor for my attention), but even her presence doesn't elicit the violence mine does.

It's heartbreaking, and I have no idea what to do.

:(

**Update**

Cautious optimism!!!

Tonight, I let Sammy out of his cage, but this time he was less aggressive than he has been for the last week. He kept calling for me all day, and hissed & struck at me when I approached his cage, but this evening he seemed less torqued. I got close to the cage, and he walked away, but I just stood there with my back to him, talking softly.

After a couple of minutes I saw him in my peripheral vision, walking back toward me. I was understandably nervous but, after a few seconds, he reached out one foot & climbed up onto my shoulder!!!

I went and sat down on the couch, and an hour's neck-skritching ensued, with no biting at all! He's still a little wild-eyed, but it's major progress.

Of course, I'm only here for a couple of days, then I have to go out of town for a week (figures, right?) - I hope we don't lose ground!
