A couple of days ago I noticed yellow on the end of my Double Yellow Headed amazons beak. At first i thought it was a stain from either dye off of a toy or from a dried pepper. Today, when i handed her a noodle she seemed a bit unsteady on one foot, when i noticed her tongue is very red at the back. I became very alarmed when i saw this. I have had her for 10 years and have never seen her beak or tongue look like this. I took her out and she gripped me just fine, but attempted to do breeding movements. She also has never done this while being held before, so i am wondering if this is just a really hard breeding season for her??

The yellow on the end of the beak is similar looking to the color of a Lilac crowned amazon. Has anyone ever seen or heard of this happening? Also, her nares are clear.

Hopefully someone with a similar experience/more knowledge can chime in to help you. Could you upload a picture of the beak and tongue?

My advice would to call and visit and Avian Vet if you are really concerned. And a visit doesn't hurt to make sure she's 100% healthy!

Welcome to the forum. Yes some pics would help. The red tongue doesn't sound good. Do you have a local AV ? 10 yrs is about right for DYH to reach maturity. What part of the world are you in? BTW do you weigh her on a regular basis? Has she lost weight?

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
I have a 43 year old lilac crowned amazon. And there's no red on the end of her beak.

The breeding season stuff is normal for this time of years, I get that from my red lored every day now....

The rest is very odd, and I'd definitely call an ACV.

Sorry. Typo. Yellow, not read. (BC Moment - I am not responsible for what I type before coffee.)

Lila has a straight horn colored beak.
