Training red lored Amazon

hi anyone know how to train ur Amazon if it won't accept treats my friend wants to target clicker train but her zon won't take the treats but it will step up so its not afraid of hands

Has she offered the bird a wide variety of treats? He may just not be interested enough in what she's offering. Perhaps he prefers chopped fruit or veg instead of nuts or seeds (Anything is possible!) Is there anything else the bird enjoys? Perhaps verbal praise? Kisses? Those 2 are what my zon will work for (most of the time). I don't believe in using treats to train, because you may not always have a treat available when your bird exhibits a behavior you want to reinforce, but you can always praise and a kiss or pet

One thing she should keep in mind is that amazons tend to be very, very stubborn birds. They can also be very, very lazy birds and have a moderately bipolar disposition too. They often do not respond as readily to trick training as other species, and some take A LOT of patience and time and effort to trick train if the bird simply isn't interested in participating. Try filling a small dish with several different treats. Pay attention to what treats he picks out first. use those treats to train with and only offer them when training, never free feed that treat. Save it for a training tool. And like Kiwibird said, many zons respond well to praise.

She's tried all his favourite treats without success he just drops them he is a older bird so maybe he just being stubborn she has a 1yr old DYHA and is having success there I don't think it's about tricks it's more to do with getting bird trained for going on a stick perch in case of aggression or emergency and geting him back in cage

Red loreds tend to be on the shy side for amazons, which is a qualified statement... "for amazons." Amazons are not shy birds...

Attention works as well as treats if they are bonded to you. A little good bird and head scratches goes a long way...
