Wow, beautiful pictures April :D! Kiwi's gorgeousness is even more magnified outdoors, he almost glows flourescent! Lucky birdie ;).

Where are you at there? Is that the Oregon coast? It's beautiful, and no one else around! Glad the family had a nice trip :).

I love this stuff! Get them out and about, and watch their disposition change before your eyes. They were never meant to sit alone in cages all day.

Is that Oswald beach, or Cannon?! Kinda looks a bit like those two places, but then a lot of the Oregon Coast looks like that. I surfed that place a couple of times in my younger days.

Kiwi looks as beautiful as always, and those beach shots are magnificent! It's great how you're both getting Kiwi out there. Looks like he really enjoyed the experience!

Cannon beach and Indian beach.

And no, I don't think they are meant to sit in cages all day either. Though on another forum I'm on, you might think it would be better to lock him in a cage rather than "risk" letting him feel the wind in his wings every once in a while! I miss the out-and-about bird owners on this forum!

I thought that looked like Cannon beach!

Yeah. I agree 110%. And what you get are fearful cage bound birds, who don't adjust well to change, who are lethargic perch potatoes, and who often end up with boredom related plucking disorders...

But hey, at least they're safe!

You have to train them to take them outside, but the difference in their quality of life, and their interaction levels is night and day.

I had someone lecture the crap outta me once about how dangerous it was to take my bird outside.

She had an african gray raised in isolation.

He plucked severely.

Tusk doesn't pluck.

Are those back packs big enough for a Macaw ? I have a outside cage for BB But would LOVE to take him out on the dock with us.

I've had no luck with the harness yet

Oh yes, they make Birdie Back Pack on wheels for macaws. (And they're practically giving them away!)

Celltei Pak-o-Macaw Backpack Carrier for Macaw

($145 for the "Stroller cart modified from baby stroller for use with Pak-o-Bird." Or you can just buy a $25.00 baby stroller, and modify it yourself and save $120.00)

A friend of mine back in SF did two of these for his birds. He got two baby strollers, cut the things up leaving just the frames. Then fabricated custom sized Plexiglass cages, and bolted those on the frames. (His birds went with him to work. I used to see him on the BART train every day.) You could make something like that, macaw sized, for around $75.00. Wouldn't even be hard.

Kiwi did not do so well being a caged bird.

Someone lecturing you? Your birds are in the top 10 best cared for most strongly bonded I've ever heard of.

Everyone has their opinions. That's why they call it a "free country."

By taking them outside, and freeflying them, which I did at the time, I was exposing them to all sorts of diseases from the wild birds, and death... which she felt was "completely irresponsible" of me.

There was SOME truth to that, but it wasn't entirely true. The risk was overstated in my case, because I did the training first. I didn't just take a flighted bird outside, and cross my fingers. I don't freefly anymore, and I did get one of my birds killed that way. (Though I may free fly Sally a little bit again, when the weather here gets a little better. She's acting like she wants too... And I'm thinking about it. She's always been exceptionally good about it, and exceptionally bonded.)

Everyone has to decide for themselves what risks they are willing to accept.

Mine are generally fine with the tree in the front yard, and I sit under it while they are out there. I don't see that as all that risky... even though they COULD possibly fly off, and it does occasionally happen. It doesn't happen often enough for me to take that away from them...

What wonderful pictures, made even more so by one truly stunning Amazon.

Thank-you, for posting them!

Our neighbor feeds the red tail hanks (bird feeder), so our DYH Amazon is limited to in house activities around home. When we visit my brother, he gets outside and truly enjoys it. Amazon faced into a light breeze and bright sun shine, I'd swear he is smiling.

Wow,April, those pictures are stunning! What a gorgeous place, no wonder Kiwi was mesmerized! He simply glows with good health. You know, I just realized that most people's birds on here get to go more places than I do.

Kiwi is gorgeous as always April! How much fun taking him to the beach!

I would love to get Zilla out and about more, she just seems so afraid of everything! The only place she likes going is the car and The Bird Hut!
