Freddie's a Big 'Ole Chicken....

It always surprises me how "skittish" Fred can be at times. He's a big bird with a big attitude sometimes, but honestly, my Linnie is braver than Fred. Today, Fred was afraid to go into his day cage because I had rearranged the cage, and rotated the toys. He refused to go in, even for breakfast! The problem was a bell, the same bell, that came with him...but now, he hasn't seen it for three weeks, and it's a big scary monster!
After lunch, all the birds went outside on the patio. Fred went outside in his night cage, as always. All was well. I check on the birds every few minutes, and when I did, Fred is clinging to the side of the cage, as if the hounds of hell are after him. He flat out refused to step on the perch in the cage. I checked it for splinters, I took the blueberries out of his bowl, as he's deathly afraid of blueberries(I buried them under his mash, hoping he'd taste them). Finally I brought him in. He played atop the same cage, talking happily. Bedtime came...Fred refused to get in the cage. :11: He's acting again as if there is a monster in that cage....I removed the toy...the same toy that has been in that cage for weeks. My only thought is that the wind blew it on him, and he got spooked. He happily went to bed, once it was removed. Poor Fred....What a scary day!!!

Aww... poor Freddie! My old Amazon, George, always hated having anything changed around in his cage-- but his reaction was more annoyance than fear. Could be that the wind stirred things around and startled Freddie; George often was skittish on windy days. Just seeing the tree branches swaying outside bothered him.

I'm thinking maybe the monsters name is Freddie :09:, could be he scares himself with that Jekyll and Hyde thing he has going on....lol, even knowing so little about Freddie, just from the experiences that you share with us, it reaffirms my belief that amazons are truely the most complex and sensitive of all parrots, I'm sure the little bugger will back to his own loveable self in no time ;).......Love ya freddie, thanks for sharing with us Sharon :)

I'm sure there will be lots of fun stories with Fred...When he's outside he keeps the neighbours laughing. They often just stand on their patio, and as they say..."enjoy the show". I've told them I really should be charging admission!:D

It's really weird about the blueberries...they really freak him out! LOL!

I bet he is not biting you!! I have tried to expose Rosie to something new every day on the advice of a very experienced bird trainer (Ken G). It seems to have worked well because she takes new things or people in stride now. It can be the smallest little object like a new plate or a large object like a new room or person. Hope this helps.

No, he's not biting....when he's insecure about something, he seldom does. I tell him "he gets too big for his britches.":D

Fred is a challenge, and I have lots to learn. That's OK, because I like a challenge. I'm hoping we are going to have a wonderful relationship, where we trust each other completely, and become really good friends. Considering that Fred is a Yellow Naped, that may not happen...but honestly, if things were to remain exactly as they are, I'd still be happy. He's such fun!:)

I hope so, Mike. As I type, he's napping, and muttering softly to himself, and with such love and gentleness in his voice...Hello baby... Come on, come on...what a pretty bird you are. Gotta laugh...he talks in his sleep!!

That is so sweet... that shows he is secure...
You are a lucky guardian... and Freddie is lucky to have you as a guardian.
