Hi Amazon people, as I type a White Fronted Amszon is making its way to my home and should be here in about 2 hours or so. An aviary bird who almost a year ago had to be taken out of the aviary as his mate died and since then was not accepted by the other oartots and has lived on his own in a cage. I csme across him in an advert and as my White eyed Conure had just crossed Rainbow bridge...he was very old and sadly though he lived with me for many many years it was never long enough...then I dpotted this boy and phoned up about him. Turns out the owner offered to drive him to my home and put him in the cage for me...so I will probably be looking for lots of advice and help once he arrives

No name yet...he has arrived and is in his cage so will leave him to settle in peace and quiet... I havent seen whats on the ring in his keg but the bird guy who brought him said that hes between 3 and 4. He looks a little sad in the cage but I suppise thats to be expected after 4 hours of a car trip and then finding himself in strange surroundings with a wierd lady peering at him now and then to make sure he was doing okay :) Thanks for the link to the body lsnguage info

Gloria, BFA, adopted on Jan. 9, 2016 when she was 30 years old
. Her mom went to a nursing home.
Also have 2 cats (Rangerand Luna) and a 24 year old aquatic turtle, named Elvis.
He's really beautiful! I've never seen a white fronted Amazon before. Very colorful!

He's such a handsome guy! Congrats :). I love the White Fronted. It always amazes me whenever I'd see them how small they are. I'm very sorry to hear about your conure.

He wasnt doing so well after his long road trip and although he was a number of hours in his cage he didnt touch food or water and I was getting really worried about him so I broke all the rules and got a desert spoon and offered him water which he licked off the spoon...he was really thirsty and drank 4 half desertspoonfuls of water once it was offered to him. I then offered him some food and fruit and he ate a little bit but mostly he flung it around his cage and after that he explored a little bit and checked out a toy....he didnt play for long then took another piece of banana from the spoon eating some and tossing the rest on the floor after that last spoonful he gave me my orders to leave his territory with his wings and I have left him to go to sleep for the night. I dont know why he didnt go to sip water from the bowl or eat food...anyone have any ideas....or any ideas on how I get food into him tomorrow if hes still not eating or drinking from the bowls.

Yes I do miss Roger my white eyed conure he was quiete a character and could talk loads so the house is very quiet since he left us for Rainbow Bridge a week ago. I have a little Blue quaker girlie who has missed him too and was in silence all week ....hopefully this guy lives as Im worried abiut him not eating though I did get some food and water into him from a spoon but Im sure not nearly enough before he dismissed me and my spoon and let me know he had enough

Wow, that is tiny, but it just makes him cute lol. I know they're smaller than the related Pionus, but smaller than even a large conure surprises me. Regardless, they have amazing head coloration and are stunning!

I'm happy to hear you tucked him in for the night. He must be stressed and confused. However, I think it's an EXCELLENT sign he took water and some tidbits you offered him via spoon! GREAT start!! :)

Tomorrow is another day. Please keep us posted on your cutie-pie.

Any body have any ideas on how to make the food and drink bowls enticing and interesting to my White fronted Amazon ( thinking of calling him Mr Biggles) if he is still not interested in them in the morning.

Not knowing your cage set up, you could (IF your food bowls can be moved around) place the food bowls right by his favorite perch. If your food bowls are stationary, I would simply fill up 2 bowls with food. One bowl of what he was used to. If he wasn’t on the ‘healthiest’ mix, you could slowly convert him onto a healthier diet. The other bowl I’d fill with fresh and/or cooked goodies.

Another idea is to get a kabob, skew up some pieces of raw veggies and fruits and hang it near him.

Amazons ‘usually’ have a pretty hearty appetite.

I know you are worried right now because he barely ate today. Let’s see what tomorrow brings.

Thank you, I know nothing about him before he came here...I was told he is rung... information was very scant other than that he was an aviary bird who lost his mate and wasnt doing well in the aviary...maybe he is rung and the ring is hidden in his feathers but I dont as yet see the ring...I was told he is between 3 and 4 years old but Im wondering if perhaps he might be youger...he still has some fluffy feathers on his back or do all Amazons have fluffy feathers....I will see if I can find a skewer and hang some fruit and veg tomorrow ...the bowls are fixed in position but I can hang a food dish on the bars and see if that works...he is using the perch above the perch that is beside the bowls...he can see the bowls and I showed them to him by making sure he was watching me as I put food and water in them but he hasnt touched them . Thanks for the tips and advice :) Im including a pic of his cage taken before he went into it as I dont want to disturb his sleep for a pic

It's normal for birds to not eat the first day or two after getting into a new home... but they usually start eating by the 2nd or 3rd day. He may be fine, just in a state of shock.

BTW, you mentioned that you used to have a white eyed conure by the name of Roger... I think I've come across his photos before (if it is in fact the same bird I'm thinking of?), and looking through them, he didn't look like a white eyed. I was just wondering if there was any chance he was actually a green conure??? (green conures look like white eyeds but with minimal to no red feathers)

I ask as after adopting a conure of unknown species, I went looking through the web to see if he is in fact the species he was previously sold as or if he might be a different species altogether... and that's how I came across Roger. Still not sure what species the guy is, since he's had at least 3 homes and a foster before coming to me and I don't know who the breeder is. (can't track the band) So unless I can find the breeder, I have to wait for him to either color up, or not color up to figure out his species for sure!

Thank you I was so worried to see him (WFA)not eating or drinking as he is thin enough as is.
Roger was green he had a couple of tiny red spots on him around the neck area...they were barely noticable but otherwise green. Do you have a link to pics of a Green Conure because when I google it all that comes up are green cheek conures and Roger was not a green cheek. Here is a video of Roger nibbling my fingers...Roger was a rescue and way wilder than this Amazon appears to be when he came here and he just loved to bite and bite and bite and look for a reaction hee hee he was a villain but a lovable villain ...if you have a Roger you will have laughter from morning til night and he will want to be a part of everything you do...I miss him so ...

Mr Biggles my WFA is looking much better today...my vet says he has a cold...he is still not eating from the bowls but is eating well today from my hand and licking his water from the spoon. I tried putting the food dish beside him but he still ignored it and also ignored what I hung for him to eat but he ate well today from my hand...I could be mistaken but I think he is also trying to say Hello. Amazing little guy...I just hope he keeps getting better and that he is okay in a day or two. The vet did not prescribe any meds at this point but told me to get as much fresh fruit and veg as I could into him.
