Question about BF Amazon

Hello guys I got an 8 month old bluefronted amazon and its very quiet since i brought it home. only makes a baby parrot sound and doesn't sit well on a perch either. and doesn't seem to like seeds. but eats a lot of boiled green peas. since there isn't a vet in my country(Maldives) i would like to get a feedback from you guys. How long ago did you bring the BF Amazon home? If it was fairly decent, he may still be settling in.

What do you mean he doesn't sit well on the perch? Is he wobbly, unstable? Got any pictures for us, perhaps?

Seeds aren't the best diet for Amazons, unfortunately. Many tend to become much too heavy if fed a seeds only, which can ultimately lead to health problems.

Thanks for your reply JerseyWendey. it doesn't eat well only soft foods like frozen peas and corn. and doesn't touch sunflower seeds or any other seed at all. I'm very curious why a parrot would reject sunflower seeds. and when it only eats the peas its droppings change to brown color and sort of watery aswell. since there aren't any vets I'm very hopeless.

Don't be hopeless! this forum is packed with information. Did you say how long you have had her? What kind of pellet does she have? Definitely get rid of the seed.

Could you possibly post a picture of your bird? Is it possible he is much younger than you think?

She's beautiful! Have you offered her any veggies/small amount of fruit? I know other experienced zon owners can comment on her look health wise. She may be still adjusting.

Well to tell you sunflower seeds are extremely fattening, and isn't the best thing for their diet. If she likes vegetables, go with that. Vegetables, fruits, grains such as rice, pasta. These are the best things for her since you don't have pellets there. And she is beautiful!!

She may just be adjusting, give her time. She's sitting back and watching and analyzing her new family.

Just a quick question/suggestion...where did you get her from? A breeder? Pet shop? Perhaps you could ask them what kind of diet they had her on?

You have a young Amazon that appears to have been well fed prior to you bringing s/he home. One of the earlier posts recommended that you return to the individual that sold you the Amazon and ask them what they had been feeding.

Sun flower seed is not recommended as a food base for Amazons. Also in an earlier posts members offered other options. Mix them with the base, the seller (breeder) was feeding.

With the exception of highly processed foods, many of the basic foods in your diet will be a better choice than providing sun flower seeds. What would normally be part of your diet over a week?

I noted that your Amazon has a leg band. Commonly, there is a series of numbers and/or letters on the band. When you have time, please provide the numbers and/or letters listed.

Slow down, and allow your Amazon to adjust to your home. In addition, your baby Amazon may not have had very much perch time. One again, give it a little time.

Your BFA looks to be healthy, great coloring, no scaling around the beak or toes. I do see the crop sunk in, she or he is not getting enough to eat. Start by spoon feeding warm mushy foods....like oatmeal, mashed cooked sweet potato, all natural peanut butter, pancakes with fresh fruit and veggies. I like to make pancakes with squash and blueberries. You have to get sunflower seed out of the cage, your asking for nothing but health problems. Find a good diet, Tropimix, Zupreem, Roudy Bush, and many more to choose from.

Based on your location in the World, much of your food source is likely being supplied from India. Like I stated in my prior post, look at your diet and work much of that into what you are feeding your Amazon. Like your Grandmother would say; No Highly Processed Foods! Sun Flowers are not a food source common to either India or your Island Nation, no reason to mix it into your Amazon's diet.

Welcome to the forum! Looking at the eyes of your beautiful BF..they are still dark in color which to me means he/she is still a young bird.

I recall when I picked up Amy <Amos?? lol :54:> she was just 16 weeks old and had the same eye coloring. As they mature the eyes turn a lighter brownish/red.

As far as food/seed/sunflowers go..Amy does get a bowl of mixed seed <I know,my bad > She was actually eating pellets when I got her,but because my Timneh refused pellets and at seed,poor Amy got seed too.

However,she eats EVERYTHING else..all veggies,fruits,pasta,chicken leg bones,anything Arllen and I eat,she gets to sample. Now at 26 yrs old,she hardly touches her seed bowl,because she gets an ample supply of good stuff.

When I had Smokey,the Grey,who would NOT TOUCH good stuff,she would cower in the corner of her house and growl like a pack of mad dogs,when Smokes saw Amy eating good things,she prolly thought to herself " gee,whats this new green bird eating? and started to taste test different things. It turned out she realized what she was missing,and started to eat everything in sight,thanks to Amy.

Try not to encourage your new friend to eat seed. Try pellets if you can get them,and try all sorts of veggies and fruits,and stuff you eat. Being in new surroundings he/she is still settling in,and at least is eating some stuff.

Thanks guys. I bought it from a pet shop. since importing birds is illegal the pet shops doesn't maintain a good environment for birds here sadly. But my issue is the bird still doesn't want to touch any hard food. isn't this a problem?

haha yeah. but its a cultural thing in maldives everyone feeding seed to parrots. i try giving every other good food for my birds.

How old is she/he? And how long have you had she/he? It still can be a settling in issue.

its about 9 months old the seller told me which can be very unreliable. i also think its having a settling issue since it was kept in a small cage till i bought it. could have been 4 months in the cage. normally at what age does the parrot start making noises? mine only makes the "baby feed me" noise

Try feeding her warm, mushy food with a spoon. I bet she will love it. Do you have oatmeal, perhaps?

yes i fed her kaytee exact baby bird food last night from a syringe. but when i feed mushy food her droppings become more and looks mushy aswell. so its not a problem right? thank you
