Yellow Shoulder Amazon, Salty
Like the topic says Salty will talk , sing and mimic to mommy but refuses to let her give scratches or to play with her. But if she is not around Salty is as silent as a grave. I can scratch and wrestle with him and he is fine with that, when he wants it. Salty will step up for Mom and does not bite her badly, but def gives her a good pinch or 2 before getting up. He'll sit on my shoulder and watch videos, and just hang. Mom gets him on her shoulder for a minute or 2 and then he is gone. Any one else have a birdy who is, for a lack of a better term,
bi-personized ?

My GCA Buddy is like that with Husband but Husband cannot touch Buddy. Husband can hand Buddy a treat, Buddy will take it gently then throw it down. He's a one person bird for sure. He loves most of the ladies like Husbands mother. He even gave her more attention than he gives me!

I can do almost anything with Sammy (in my avatar), but my wife can't get near him without him going on a full-out attack on her (going for the face with claws, wings, and beak). However - if I'm not around, he'll happily take food from her, let her clean his cage, pick him up if he's gotten himself into a fix, etc.

Wanted to bump this thread up to see if your birds have changed in the two years since you originally posted.

We took in my mother's 14 year old Amazon last year before she went into a nursing home. Every time my wife walks into the room the bird talks his head off. But if she gets a finger near the cage she won't get it back. She even bribes him with his favorite, peanuts, when I'm not around. He even talks to strangers walking down the street.

I walk into the room, silence. Five seconds after my wife nearly loses a finger he bows his head for me to scratch it. I am the only one that feeds him, cleans his cage, and the only one that can pick him up. But still silence.

None. My wife has one too many. Kidding!
Well brother, you know my sad story. Bird treats Mommy like his homesweethome and me like whatever winds up on the doormat en route. He DOES like to scream my name at me, as if it were the most horrible insult he knows.

Wow, talk about resurection of a thread ! In fact, Salty HAS changed a lot since I posted that in 2016, especially with me being in hospital and re-hab for a month, with no warning. Geri continued Salty's trick training regimen and that has caused him to really open up with her. He even gives her a nitey nite kiss on the cheek. So I think that parrots can change their spots, so to speak, or at least let others join their exclusive club, with persistance and the right set of conditions.

Absolutely! My Sam the BFA will let me do anything to or with him and never really bites me, except when we go on vacation. I get one good bite when we come home. I guess he is telling me not to do that again.

I can pick him up, do his toenails, clip his wings, bathe him and scratch him anytime I want. He talks to me and holds my hand while I do his pin feathers.

My husband, however, can't pick him up or touch him on his cage. He loves to play rough with him, running back and forth and ringing all his bells. He wrestles with him, and does tug of war with rope toys. He will allow him to pet him only on the kitchen table or the couch. Then, he goes full out, laying his head down on Roger's knee for a good scratching. I have seen his whole head in Roger's hand, but never on the cage. Go figure.

Uhh I'm going to leave Finley put of this one lol because he's "special".
Paris will bite my husband in the mornings on the weekend when he gets the birds up and feeds them breakfast while I sleep in. He says she all fine and goes her morning poop in the sink and gives kisses and such but after he gives her breakfast (even when she's done eating) if he tries to pick her up or pet her she flares her tiny tail and bites him HARD. But as soon as she hears or sees me she is fine and he can handle her with ease. I didn't believe that Paris (who is not a bitter at ALL) would do such a thing so he pulled up the pet cam footage and sure enough she lunges at him and prances around and makes a big fuss but then I walk in and she steps up and gives me a kiss lol. And the weird thing is that it only happens sometimes.
