How to get unhandable amazon in carrier??

Hi! I'm back with a new questions about my rescue orange winged amazon Bonnie.
Turns out poetaster we got Bonnie from just got slapped with assault and kidnapping charges. They got into a disagreement about reptile care and locked the door and beat up a few customers. Whats more, when we called for more information three different employees gave us three different stories on how they 'obtained' her and how she was acting during the time they had her.
So she is off to the vet, for wheezing that showed up a few days after I got her. She has an appointment with the nearest avian vet today, two hours away from home!
She is in her new playtop cage, which is so massive she seems tiny in it and enjoying a hundred dollars worth of new toys very happily. But she has to go in the little parakeet cage she came in to go to the vet.
How do I get her in the cage (I'd rather put her in a cat carrier, can I do that if I line the bottom with towels for her to hang onto?) and make her trip to the vet as easy for everyone involved as possible?

Use a thick towel. It will be a little traumatic, but also fairly quick.

Yup, the cat carrier is a whole lot easier, 'bigger door'!

When back from the Vet, at some future time, you can complete a simple upgrade the the cat carrier to provide your Amazon a perch that can be removed when transporting a cat. See the DIY section.

Good Luck at the vets with Bonnie I hope the trip there and back is easy on both Bonnie and you and that the vet can prescribe some meds for her wheeze. My boy had to get treated by the vet too for a wheeze when I got him first...its a worrying time but he's fine now and please God Bonnie will be fine too in a short spell and with the help of some medication that wheeze will be gone in mo time at all.

She did awesome, the vet was amazing. She has a sinus infection and she was prescribed some banana flavored medicine for it. She stepped up for the vet tech perfectly and even stepped up for me several times once I got home. Vet said she shows years of very poor diet and she seems to be an older, possibly senior bird though there is no way to know for sure. She is 100% an orange winged amazon. She has dried beak and feet so she has a vitamin A deficiency and she seems to have once lived in a good home many years ago since she shows all signs of being cuddly and sweet and very handleable once she settles in and starts being handled again. Hoorah!
She sat on my shoulder today for about three minutes. So a ton of progress!

Get as much vitamin A foods in her as you can, and I'd start her on Aloe Detox to improve her liver values once you've gotten done with all the medication.

THEY WILL USUALLY SUCK DOWN SWEET POTATO. COOK ONE AND CUBE IT.
YOU CAN FREEZE THAT STUFF, AND THEN JUST REHEAT IT FOR 20 SECONDS OR SO IN THE MICROWAVE... (CHECK TO MAKE SURE IT ISN'T TOO HOT BEFORE YOU GIVE IT TO HER. BEWARE OF BURNED CROPS.)

IF SHE EATS 4-5 CUBES A DAY, THE VITAMIN DEFICIENCY WILL GO AWAY.

ONE good sized sweet potato can last you ten days if you cut it up and freeze it.

Aloe detox I mix 50/50 with what ever the favorite fruit juice is, and just give it to him that way over the course of a day. Mix a little up in the morning, give him some. Keep it in the fridge. Offer it again several times during the day. Get him to drink as much as you can, and then dispose of the left overs at the end of the day.

Glad to hear it all went well. I'll have to contend with getting Gloria to a vet for a check up. She still doesn't get on my hand or a stick but your experience gives me hope! I can also vouch for the sweet potatoes. I just bake one in the microwave and scrape out a little of the pulp into her chop bowl. She also loves it spread on one of her birdie taco chips for a snack.

SO glad that you've rescued her, and that she's responding!! Sounds like the vet is positive, too, so looks like this is "...the start of a beautiful friendship"!

Hi there... I use a "Pet Mate Pet Carrier" When I take Amy to the vet. It is big enough for a normal sized kitty..12 lbs or so. I wipe it down and use a little windex and paper towel to clean it off and wipe the floor/bottom out,then lay either a hand towel, or paper towel down on the floor.

Luckily for ME :54:,when Amy see's this,she knows she is going for a ride anywhere lol and that's all that matters to her,and she'll walk right in on her own <waiting for her to close the swing out door behind her >

I used to just throw a small,soft,hand towel over Smokes and pick her up..one two three and its done :52:

Bonnie is doing fantastic. She loves her toys and big cage and even her playmate Darwin (Green cheek conure, I stand with one hand between them and move her if they get any closer than two feet, she still seems to enjoy her company). She still yells and makes monkey sounds when people get to close to her but treat training and stepping up on a branch has been extremely successful. She will make lots of noise and fuss but when I hold up my arm and an almond she jumps onto my arm and climbs up to my shoulder to eat her almond reward.

Fun story. She loves her almonds so much she decided to go on an adventure the other day. She had clipped wings and never leaves the top of her cage unless I pick her up and put her somewhere else. I left the room and heard hysterical screaming. I ran in and she was hanging off the side of my lovebird's cage screaming and flapping her wings. My poor lovebird who is normally aggressive and thinks she's the size of an elephant was freaking out inside less than three inches from a screaming, flapping amazon. I immediately offered her my arm and she hopped up and gratefully returned to her playtop to lick her wounds while Damon (The lovebird) huffed and puffed inside her cage while her mate Kiwi( They are sisters and mates and cannot be together except for rare supervised sleepovers since they try to kill each other had have 24/7 sexy times) freaked out trying to get to her to comfort her. After several minutes of searching the room for whatever had caused the incident in quiet, shy Bonnie I noticed I had left the jar of almonds open in front of Damon's cage.
Bonnie's world revolves around getting her next almond fix.
Sure enough when I grabbed an Almond out of the jar and closed it up and hid it and Bonnie immediately got upset until she saw I had taken one out. She got her almond treat in the end and the jar of Almonds has not been left out again much to her dismay.

Sounds to me,that Bonnie is settling right in,and getting comfy with you! and that is awesome!.. Now...all we need is some PICTURES!!
