Amy a Blue Front 'Zon
Jonesy a Goffins 'Too who had to be rehomed :-(

And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
..She is all alone now, except for me  It was Smokey first, for 25 yrs, then with her passing,it was Jonesy..and Arleen.

Jonesy is rehomed, and Arleen is gone. Amy makes friends with EVERYONE..she wanted to be pals with Smokes, but Smokes wanted no part. Still, there was another birdie here. Then The Cockatoo Man came along, and he liked Amy,so they hung out together, preening each other, and she became fast friends with Arleen. She is a very social bird ;)

Now,she is a lot quieter...she does talk and mumble, especially when we watch birdie youtube vids together, but I'd like to get her a buddy. < I'm prolly feeling the empty nest syndrome myself, having had 2 birdies for all these years> So I was thinking of getting a budgie/'keet or a 'teil, for company for both of us lol.

I had a 'keet as a youngster < first pet bird> and he was awesome..and I have interacted with teils too. just wondering if a 'zon and something that small would get along? Obviously he/she would have his/her own house.

Any 'zon owners have a teil or keet for friends? I know it isn't garaunteed that they'd be buddies, but it wouldn't be because of Amy lol.

Thoughts?

Just to chuck something else in the mix - what about a ringneck? I mean technically they're a 'keet ;)
I've often found ringneck videos that show off their friend making skills to bigger, often uninterested parrots..[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alJDfx5xjgM"]Kanye the Indian ringneck dancing for Melo an African grey - YouTube[/ame] this is one. Henry and Marley are often like this too.
I reckon, with the smaller birds, you'd have more chance with the tiel then budgie...but I guess it's going to depend on the bird that you choose.

Edited to add: Henry is always pretty desperate for Marley kisses. He'll go up and say 'Kiss Kiss' and lean in, but Marley just flies off. They'll take the interaction wherever they can get it!

Haha yeah - very fair point. Henry is my expensive bird. Marley is a complicated custody agreement/long term holiday scenario.
In which case I do think size counts - you'll have more luck with a cockatiel, and apparently it's been done.

I'd be more cautious, but I know Henry and I know he can hold his own. You know your birds and you're not exactly inexperienced. A flighted male 'tiel would get his whistle on, could be out together and have an escape route if he felt threatened by Amy.

Just my humble opinion!

I'm thinking a friend for both of you?

Remember that our Amazons deeply connect into 'our' emotions! It's near looking into a mirror i.e. they reflect.

Enough said! LOL!

On the subject of an IRN. Hey, I'm an Amazon Snob, i.e. it should only be an Amazon. Having said that, those IRN's seem to have keys to doors that I did not know I had! Thanks Itchyfeet.

Not to threadjack or anything....but IRN's really are that amazing. I desperately wanted an African Grey, but poor hubby was having a hard time dealing with the extended families RB2 and SC2, so I started looking smaller to help him feel more comfortable - although said Rb2 is now living with us :D But that's just testament to the character of the ringneck - Henry is amazing to handle for anyone, highly interactive, an incredible speaker and quick to learn. He's genuinely my dream, happily ever after parrot.

The first video with the teil and blue front makes me think that's just how Amy would react..The BF seemed very inquisitive of the teil and the teil gave smooches to the BF.
Like I posted earlier..Amy is very social and likes everyone <welllll...except my ex wife lol..Amy chased her down the hall way once lmao :D>
And price is a factor..I'd LOVE to get another 'zon..or grey...

Don't get me wrong here! I LOVE Amy to pieces..She IS my soulbird!:D We have been spending lots of time together, and even at 26 yrs young, she is still learning new things, and letting me get even "closer" to her.
I can stroke/pet her back and wings without her even looking, where before she'd turn and look at me then try to scoot away. I can gently put my hands around her and pick her up and turn her upside down and put her on her back in my hand and she just looks at me,as if to say..."ok..now what?"

Our "outside...in the car" time is wonderful. She gets so chatty when we drive around. and in stores she'll ride around on the carts handle bars talking to whomever will listen to her,and If someone asks if they can pet her, I say yes,BUT..beware she might nip..but she doesn't.

I'm sure she is loving the extra attention she gets now,but when I'm not home and she is all alone..I feel so sad for her. Maybe a "friend" where the three of us could interact..and she could teach the "new" one different things...like she taught Smokey that eating other things then seed was a good thing lol..I dunno...

Since there is no guarantee it would be a 'friend' for Amy, but still bird company, I'd say get whatever 'you' really want Jim, that's in your budget :).

There are a lot of vids here already that show different sized species being friends. I have a bonded "odd couple" too. Raven has his friend Griffin who is less than half his weight. Their beak size isn't as obviously different though.

Can't wait to see what you choose!

Okay I'll stop now, you get my drift!

Please dont stop Im enjoying these hee hee Fab videos ...
As to advice about a pal for Amy I dont know about a tiel but I would rule out a Budgie as I have visiting budgies stay here from time to time and though they befriended PeterPan (quaker) they then decided (2 of them) that they would start to attack her toes and they small as they were terrorised her...I dont think a budgie is a good idea as they tend to like to be the boss and for that reason I dont think a budgie and a Zon are a good mix

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
I have no experience with companion birds of greatly different sizes, so can't offer any advice, Jim. Your heart is in the right place, and you will find that ideal second bird that will be friendly with Amy and be kind to your wallet!

I guess Amy and I will go "look" today lol. I think I posted a while back,we stopped into our local 'AllPets" and they had a huge glass type atrium with a dozen or more green armed bee bees..Amy was really looking around intently and one hopped onto a perch close to a panel and started to beak it..Amy slide down my arm, onto my hand, and leaned forward and started to beak the glass too..it was sooo cute..and funny. She found a friend!

But at $349 I told her so sorry baby!

Jim I love how you worded that - it's brilliant you can take her with you to look together! :D
