Working with Salty the last 2 nights has been a real pleasure and showed me just how smart these birds are. Not only has Salty gotten past the totally rotten experience we had on Monday with his Aviator harness, he showed some cognitive thinking.

We have been working about 3 weeks with this trick:

But just using the blue rings, to let him get the idea of putting them onto the posts. Salty would put them onto any post, blue red, yellow, didnt matter.
So on Tuesday night, with out any prompting, I handed him a red ring. And he put onto the red post!! And the blue rings only on the blue post. Smart, right? Gets better. Last night, Wen, we are doing the training with red and blue rings, and I handed him a YELLOW ring, again, no prompting or words. And he put it on the yellow post. In fact all 3 colors he was putting on the correct post, blue, red and yellow ! If my son had not been watching, no one would have believed me! Salty was 4 for 5 for each color, too.

And I pulled out the Aviator harness, figuring we would need to start from scratch with that, he was so tangled up in it, and upset too. Nope, he stuck his head right into the head loop, and let me drape the harness over him, like nothing happened a few nights ago.

He got extra special treats last night!

That is so awesome! What a smart Salty! We haven't been able to accept the "harness monster" yet so congrats on that :)

@Graciesmom - we haven't 'accepted' the harness monster yet either, but apparently we lost no ground due to the tangled up event on Monday 5/16. Salty puts his head thru the head stall, and lets me drape the harness on his back and over his wings. Its the wings that are proving so damn difficult. He HATES anything touching his wings.

I would gladly accept any suggestions on this!

Great job on the rings...very impressive! As for the harness monster...lol...sissy will scream and run away from me when she sees it..quite comical. Other days she's ok with it and once it's on ...she is happy and loves to be out. Been very humid here in Clearwater lately, we get outside and it's almost to much for her...good luck and thanks for the great update on salty..gives me motivation to try something like this with sissy.

@Jim - yep , we had a roaster the other day, saved the leg bones, and he's had one each night. Loves the marrow and the cartilage. Now he's a real velociraptor, he's tasted MEAT! MEAT, give me MEAT !
