This is Oscar who we assumed to be male(never had test previous owner that bought from breeder told us that) but anyways I believe these actions to be a mating calls and actions. Am I correct? Also he seems to always squat down when doing it and when you do rub the back of his head he squats more and lifts his tail. Now he just started doing this and I read not to pet him when he is in this stage can lead to issues down the road is what I took from my research. Another question is since he always seems to squat when this goes on would one assume he is not a he rather a she? Thanks and also Oscar is around 3 years old.

For a 100% confirmation get a test. Lifting the tail and flattening out like a pancake is more of a female action, but to get an absolute confirmation, get your fid tested.

Yes agree with Taw5106 to be sure have a test done. You might have to be prepared for Oscaretta LOL. Keep the fussing to a minimum for the time being so as not to encourage this kind of behaviour becoming any worse.

He/she is probably reacting to certain conditions both internally and externally just best not to exacerbate it IMO. A frustrated bird would undoubtedly be a grumpy bird.

Is his a mating behavior, yes. Here is a link to my adventure with a young, active hen. My hen up is an eclectus however, she has been extremely hormonal since February, 2016. Not saying your Amazon will be like this but this is some info to help. My Amazon is male and he is 26 yo. He isn't so instant reactive on dynamite, he's mellowed.

Yup, mating response! Really not recommended that you encourage that response that close to your face, neck, ear or shoulder. A frustrated Amazon will be more likely than not to take a sizeable chunk out of one or more of those areas.

Since, you have likely not been to an Avian Vet with your Amazons yet. It is time to make that appointment and get a DNA sex test and a full spectrum blood test.

Please read the first Thread in the Amazon Forum, found at the top of the Threads and highlighted in light blue. I recommend that you set your Amazon near by and read that Thread Aloud to your Amazons. Repeat it several times. The goal is for you to begin the process of learning Amazon and second to provide a non-provoking interaction with your Amazon. Amazon's love to be read too!

I would also recommended that you read the Thread regarding the member that is getting a Blue Fronted Amazon. Lots of things in the Thread that you will likely find helpful!

I'm not sure of the others, but I've used AvianBiotech which is very reliable and offers a LOT of tests other than DNA, the one I'm a big fan of is storing DNA samples in case of a lost or stolen bird.
