A little slice of the Amazon in Trinidad

New to the forum here and just saying hello to everyone. My name is Kavish and I'm located in Trinidad and I'm the proud new owner of two Amazons. Not particularly sure what sub species they are as I received them from a cousin who migrated and had recently acquired them. The larger of the two is named Bella and is a supposed female while the smaller one is yet to be officially named but nicknamed 'Fella' and is a supposed male. Bella is almost fully feathered while Fella still has some filling in to do and both are currently being hand fed. I'm currently feeding them Roudybush Formula 3 in a 30/70 ratio twice a day with daily morning weighings to adjust the amount of food given at each serving. Additionally if anyone can help me identify the species it would be greatly appreciated and I will attach some pictures below, thank you.

Re: Hey Guys

Welcome, Kavish, Bella and Fella! Congratulations, your baby Amazons are beautiful. I'm afraid I don't know my Zons well enough to venture a guess as to the sub species. We have a great group of Zon enthusiasts, I'm sure they will be able to help.

Great photos! Thank you for sharing!

Re: Hey Guys

Thanks Allee

I just cut and offered the first non-handfeeding formula food to Bella who was apprehensive at first but she's deep in the mango now. The baby boy 'Fella' is still too small it seems and he decided to go to sleep instead. Took a couple pics, enjoy.

Re: Hey Guys

My first reaction was to say Festive Amazon in immature color, which we don't see often in the US, but I realize you're in Trinidad. Just curious what country your cousin brought the birds from? From what I know, Festive have a red rump area. Not sure if any subspecies of Festive, or if there are, if they all have red rumps).

Oh, and welcome to the forum! Beautiful birds :).

Hey the guy he got them from said they came from Colombia supposedly and called them red headed Colombians but I can't find anything on them by that name. Yeah here in Trinidad we have the blue fronted Amazon and it's pretty abundant we see them every morning and evening and a lot of people keep them here as pets.

I really think they are young Festives.

Now I recall the Bodin's subspecies have the red rump (I looked into this species at one time from a breeder in the US). Not sure if the nominate race has it too. Yours looks like the nominate race. I'd be surprised if it's not a festive, and I looked up that Columbia is one of the countries of origin for that species.

Re: Hey Guys

Thanks RavensGryf as well as everyone else for their complements and welcome.

So this afternoon (pre mango) I noticed 'Fella' wasn't opening one of his eyes, apparently Bella scratched him on the area surrounding his eye which caused it to swell, it has since gone down but I must admit I got pretty worried. Here's the last picture of Bella for the day after dinner.

Re: Hey Guys

Bella is beautiful. How is Fella's eye doing now?

Is Fella still hand feeding? He looks pretty young. I know my species pretty well, but as far as raising chicks I know nothing. There are also a lot of Amazon people here that will be able to give you good advice on behavior too.

Re: Hey Guys

He's doing fine now the swelling went all the way down and yeah they're both still hand feeding actually. I did some additional research based on your suggestions and I think you might be spot on with the species identification but we would confirm as their feathers and coloration fully come in. At last weigh in Fella was 0.8lbs and Bella was 0.98lbs and growing.

I'm not sure if I can use this particular thread as a journal for them both or should I make a separate one?

Thanks Ravens and Scott.
Here are some more pics!

I noticed this on Fella's right eye, (the one that was previously swollen). Seems to me like a bit of scar tissue what do you guys say, his left eye is normal.

Welcome to the Parrot Forums and more importantly: The Amazon Forum, where Amazons Rule and definitely Have More Fun!

You have gotten great advice on your Amazon's Species. I have never seen a Festives other than pictures. They had not been Imported in large numbers and as a result are not common in North America.

A couple of recommendation regarding Chew Toys for your Amazons; you will want to start them with much softer wood than currently seen in their cage. So, start them on pieces that can be dented by light /medium pressure by your finger nail. When they can (separately) chew the softer wood toys, you can move to a slightly harder woods. Point is, you want to develop play /chew activities early on and providing hard woods early will slow their interest.

Start shopping /searching for natural wood peaches. You will want to target a cross-section of sizes starting with 18 mm up to 38 mm. The peaches they commonly sleep on will commonly be toward the large side of the range. Parrots are more comfortable on nature branches because they vary in diameter.

Set your scale to Metric for your Amazon's weights. Although the US is still locked into English measurements, Metric is slowly working its way into our day to day lives. Our Medical services have long ago switch to Metric with our Vet care also using Metric. This is especially true with weights.

As a quick introduction to Amazon Behavior, please see the first Thread of the Amazon Forum. It is at the top of the listed Threads and is highlighted in Light Blue and Titled: Amazons Body Language. At the age of your babies, you will see only the most basic communication items. But the point is, You will need to learn Amazon and by learning Amazon early, your life with your Amazons be a much happier place for everyone. The best way to learn Amazon is to place a chair next to their cage and read that Thread aloud to them in your Native Language. The goal is that by the time you begin understand their language (normally after several reads) they would have become more accustomed to your voice and you will have learned Amazon! A true Win - Win for everyone! Very wise Humans re-read the Amazon Body Language Thread very often when new to Amazons and than a couple of time a year as a refresher.

Since you are now in the company of Amazons, its time to learn that it is best to consider yourself 'Owned By An Amazon(s)' and not the other way around. The expression: 'Amazon's Rule' has several meanings and this is one. At some point in the next two - five years this will make sense. So, at this point just set it in the back of your mind.

Socialize your Amazons. Once they are comfortable you should be placing them on near anyone that you are comfortable with having your Amazons on. You will likely be asking more questions regarding Socialize as they become a little older. VERY IMPORTANT: Socializing assure that your Amazon(s) do not become 'One Person' parrots!

Welcome to the Wonder World Of Amazons!

Hi Kavish. Your birds are very beautiful. You should take the advise offered here very seriously, there is a lot of scar tissue. Think about caging them separately, just cause they were nest mates doesn't mean they will be buddies.

Oh what beautiful and unique babies Bella and Fella are! We have a fairly limited amount of zon species here in the US pet trade, so I'm glad you've chosen to share your 'rare' (to us) babies!

Hey guys sorry I haven't posted in a while. I've been extremely busy with work and finishing college as well as I went on a vacation for a week or so. Bella and Rio are doing great and I've purchased some additional perches and accessories for them whilst abroad. Fighting has subsided and they're getting along perfectly. I'm still searching for an appropriate branch to place in their cage but I've changed the configuration quite significantly since my last pictures. Purchased and installed the following with the exception of the beak conditioner. Still have that in reserve but the clay bar is in and they love it. Can't recall the name or brand of the red and blue perches at the moment.
That's all for now, thanks for all your comments and enjoy the updated pictures below.
