Yesterday i was working in the room next to Cleo's Room! He was playing with his toys in particular a rope ball attacked to the roof of the cage with a little chain like this one

with different lock!
At some point He starts to yell in aggressive way. Some time he became aggressive with his toys but this time he doesnt stop! So after one minute i went to check him and i found He was screaming because the chain had formed a knot around his right end paw! I run immediatly to take a towel, to open the cage to help him! But Just Cleo see me he became more agitated and hanging only by tied paw he started to try to fly!! At the end fell down at the bottom of the cage! He was with breathless for 5-6 minutes and moved in strange way the wing of the paw injured! I checked him and there wasn't blood! I reamained next to him to calm down and check him! After 5-6 minutes he cames next to me and asked me scracth on his head! I could clearly see he was scared and wanted to be consoled! Normally he want scracth for about max one minute! This time after 6-7 minutes i stop it! Here a video during the scracth!

So it's not first time he knot his paw with the toys! Aldo anorher time with a little bell like this

So i ask: is it better avoid chain toys and stuff like this??

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
So happy Cleo wasn't permanently injured, but many toys have the potential to severely injure if not kill. Parrots enjoy twisting and turning objects, and the toy you posted is very intricate and can easily strangle a foot or neck. If you would like to provide chain, large plastic links are far better and are more likely to be chewed - but monitor to make sure the fragments are not eaten. I never provide bells; even though parrots enjoy the noise, the "striker" can be removed and is often soft metal that is dangerous lead or able to be broken to bits and swallowed.

There are many safe toys available; my favorites are mostly composed of soft and untreated (no chemicals used) wood and very hard plastics.

I am so glad CLeo is OK.

Tip #1 Generally parrots like to be scratched against the grain of the feathers ( ie twords the beak, not away from it) Maybe Cleo will like it more then 1 min if you do it like that.

Tip # the only links I and most on here use are the C shaped screw links, and tighten them with a small wrench, cuz parrots CAN unscrew loose ones.

Tip#3 all loops or chains must be welded closed. Links or loops should not have gaps, as these can be forced open by strong parrot beaks. Even little parrot beaks.

Tip#4 Never have lengths of chain loose as a part of or as the toy itself,- they can become a noose around the parrots neck.

I'm so relieved Cleo ended up being okay! I would avoid toys like that in the future, especially since he's had problems with them before. wrench13 has some very good advice.

I hope he got comfort from your head scratches:)

Glad Cleo is OK. My Ekkie Venus and my Zon Buddy have gotten their feet stuck and I talk with them calmly and they will calm down letting me work on their feet. An example, Venus walked on a new throw rug I put down and her nails got caught in the loops. I didn't expect that but slowly released each toe and as I released on I'd have her put it on my hand so she could step up toe by toe. That rug was removed right away.

As for the metal chains and toys, if I get a toy with metal chains, I remove them and replace them with rope. Also I only use C clamps that screw shut if I can't use rope. Since Venus picks locks I wouldn't put it past her to figure out how to unscrew a C clamp.

Some kinds of toys can be safe for most birds, but if your bird as an individual has had an issue with a certain style of toy, it would be wise to no longer offer those kinds to that individual bird. For example, my BFA has a real problem with wood perches. He chews them out from under his feet and falls. It has happened on numerous occasions. He no longer gets wood perches because I am afraid he will injure himself falling one day.

Glad Cleo is ok, and hopefully those extended scritches helped restore some trust in your green buddy and reminded him you love him and he needn't lash out so much:)
