I know yoshi has been with us for the last maybe 3 weeks. In this time he is very close to me. But i also spend my time giving him cuddles, kisses and lots of scritches. I know no bird likes children, they're loud, fast, and even more loud. I keep my children from handling Yoshi, the few times that i did he kinda went for their finger or hand.
My daughter questioned me today if she would ever be able to hold yoshi?

Am i giving him too much love (if that's even a thing) and he may be over bonding with me? Or am i just stressing over nothing.

I personally think it's a good idea to get him socialized with as many people as you can. You can't expect him to be okay with things (or people) that he's never been exposed to!

I can understand not wanting your children to handle him if you think that they aren't ready, but you could hold him and let them pet him? Just start slowly.

I let them talk to him, and offer him treats and his toy. He doesnt like petting, its more me petting him but more gentle rough play Its weird. He's only 12 weeks old.

Can I ask how old your children are?

I would agree, the more they can be involved at this stage, the better (considering the situation is safe for all involved.)

Please know that I have no experience with amazons(yet) but In the hours and hours of reading on how to properly train and socialize large birds I think that because of how old Yoshi is that you should really get him used to new people now especially members of your family if you have him clicker trained every time he steps up to a person besides you click and give him treats and attention. I am not positive If that will work for a larger bird but I can pass goose off to anyone who wanted to hold him because he knows that new people are very fun and he gets his favorite treats. I do not let other people pet him unless he offers his head for scratches because there is a very large difference between standing on a new person and allowing a new person access to your neck and I wouldn't ask or expect goose to do that.

Just make everything that involves new people a game I got a couple friends over my house and each person had different treats from plain air popped pop corn to a tiny bit of pecan or fresh fruit and they had them hidden in little zip locks bags every Time goose would step up to them they would click and give him a treat and each person has a very different treat so it was fun for him and when he made a full circle I would bring him into a different room and tell them to switch bags so then he would be curious as to who has what treat and associates guests with fun games and lots of treats just be careful not to over feed he got very very small bits of each treat. In the entire activity he only nipped one person and it was me for taking him away from his new friends when they had to leave.

There is an instagram account 'flocking.with.amazons' and their Amazons are fully integrated with their little boys , its very interesting. They did it well.

I don't have kids but have 12 nieces and nephews. When they come over they know to leave Buddy alone because he will bite. He says Hello sweetly, makes goo goo eyes, purrs, lures people to come see him and when they get to his cage he starts hitting and biting the bars of his cage. I am the only one that can handle him, amazons are pair bonded birds so they typically bond with one person but socializing is key. Kiwibird is a great person to talk with. She's worked with Kiwi and they have a good relationship.

Also Buddy is 26 yo and I got him when he was 24 yo. His owners had passed away and I picked him up from the police station. The city pound didn't have facilities for birds so he spent the night with the police. Kind of fitting, lol! He and I bonded right away, I was giving him scritches while signing the paperwork to take him. To explain, his owners Rita (my cousin) had passed away and 6 months later her husband passed. The police were called to do a welfare check and found her Husband had passed. Buddy had no food or water so the officers gave him food and water and took him to the station.

My point though is even in his 20's, he has his moments. This morning Husband walked up to Buddy's cage saying Good Morning, Buddy hits the bars and starts chewing on his rope ladder. I reach over and he bends his head wanting a scratch. With the little ones, be vigilant and make sure they understand that the beak hurts. I'm pretty sure you're already doing that but when little ones come over, I have one I have to keep an eye on because she likes to harass and poke at Buddy.

Oh they know that the beaks hurts. Tjey are used to my parents galah that i have fostered for 2 months. Today my kids were having breakfast on the couch and i plopped him down in the middle of them. And then my kids were offering their pancakes and waffles and he's was like "wow, these kids giving me food."
A good friend if mine that has about 8 amazons in her house, all rescued from terrible conditions when they were babies, since she has two boys about the same age as my boys. She told me a couple of things to do, so yoshi sees that the boys arent so bad after all even though they're loud and fast...lol. Yoshi is young so this is to my advantage.

SOCIALIZE!! I began with Amy when she was just a pup ;) 14 weeks old.
Now at nearly 27 she will "tolerate" most people. Some people she'll go right to...others..eehhh...it takes a little time lol.

There are still times with ME,when I come to her house, especially in the morning, she will still bang the bars and lunge at me! I just say in a loud voice...NO!!! YOU DONT DO THAT WITH DADDY!!

My son James, who is 29 years old, isn't found of birds to begin with, and Amy can sense that..plus he doesn't come around too often, and when he does,he doesn't pay any attention to her..so she's a b**** to him.

You have very young kids. And a young 'zon..personally I think this would be a good time to introduce Yoshi to them. Let Yoshi get accustomed to them being close. Maybe after 6 months or so of them talking, giving treats, handing Yoshi a toy, getting Yoshi ACCUSTOMED to the children, and them to Yoshi..I'd try with your 9 y.o. "step up". IF Yoshi should bite/nip,I think <even tho it may HURT > a 9 y.o. would handle it better than a 4 y.o.

Just my $.02 here mind you lol

Jim,

Thank you! Oh im socializing him alright, i plop him between the kids and me supervising when theyre eating, taking baths etc... those kids and my fids are my world, and than there's my hubby 😂😂.
If they're going to grow up together they better like each other. One of my kids are going to inherit Yoshi when I'm gone...lol.

Yoshi is just being a little booger right now. Since he nipped/bit all three of them, he's testing to see who has the balls to approach him.

But in the end,an amazon who is well socialized,is an AWESOME critter! ;)
