A New Feathered Family Member

I haven't posted in a while, dealing with a heartbreaking loss (human) in my family. I promised my family member that I would love and care for his beloved parrot for the rest of my life, a year-old Mexican Redheaded Amazon (aka Green-cheeked Amazon), so he has joined my flock. His name is Logan, and he's a male. Understandably, he was confused and angry, wondering where his "dad" was, but I have the advantage of knowing him very well, since he was a just-weaned baby, so we have grieved our loss together. It's been about six weeks now and he's finally starting to get comfortable and play again. So, I'll be spending more time in the Amazon section. I just wanted to introduce him to the Amazon fans here.

He is really a handsome bird. Good on you for taking him in. I hope that he fits right in to your flock. He looks pretty happy there.

Thank you, everyone. I appreciate the compassion and the welcome to Logan. He's a nice baby. I'm lucky because he was already disease-tested, on a healthy diet, and with good basic parrot manners, so he's a pretty easy bird to be around. His cage was a bit too small for my sensibilities so after six weeks, I just moved him into a bigger cage. Being an amazon, that was not a big deal to him at all. Within minutes, he was running around and exploring every nook and cranny, seeming to relish the extra real estate. It was good to see him express happiness after so long being depressed.

I hope to teach him more manners, such as stepping onto a hand-held perch, and to take treats by hand (his dad always put treats into his bowl, and he is not crazy about the handheld perch at all). I'm still learning his "language," which is definitely different from my other birds. He's a rather punitive teacher, so I've received a couple of significant nips, but I'm learning. Admittedly, I don't speak amazon as well as I do Grey and Cockatoo, but I'll get better. . . and he will, too. I'll spend more time in the amazon section of the forum. I want to honor his dad by giving him the best life possible.

Logan is really loving his new, larger cage and toys. I hung the Atom over his cage and big rolling bird tree and I just leave him out all day, a real change from him being mostly caged except when his dad was directly playing with him. The pinning eyes are from excitement (this time, LOL; I do know what those CAN mean). While we've yet to completely learn to trust each other, we're working on being better friends. He's a very young bird (just turned a year old) so there will be time to learn good manners before the hormones hit. He will step up and let me scratch his head and he repeats almost everything I say (he's really skilled and motivated in the verbal department). One day at a time. . . .

Welcome back, I too have a new MRHA, approaching 4 months of age and learning from all the helpful and informative people on this site.
