Ok guys so I'm going to start a running thread for bonkers and me and give people who are considering an Amazon a look at what it's like to live with one.

Day 1
I brought bonkers home with me yesterday and I was extremely prepared for him to not want to do anything and it I was gonna take it at his speed but his speed turned out to be a million miles an hour he was going crazy asking me to let him out a play with him. I have already made the mistake of leaving the room to use the restroom and when I came back 1 minute later he had destroyed my 250 dollar gaming headset but that was my fault for leaving it out.
So far he is Amazing and I will update you guys on here regularly. :green1:

Gaming headset? You mean birdie chew toy! Haha, don't mean to laugh but Bonkers sure gave you an abrupt welcome into the 'owned by an amazon' club:p This is why I put so much effort into training Kiwi not to chew stuff up that wasn't his to chew (it took time and consistency, but he learned the difference between "mine" and "yours" and I could leave him unattended with anything but food and expect to come back to find it untouched). If Bonkers is already exploring, time to start teaching him what is off limits to curious beakies!

And 'twill be ever thus. We were always careful to make sure that ours was not left unsupervised, to especially keep all electrical cords out of reach, and we used tall stands with plates/shelves he couldn't climb past to keep him from going walkabout on the floor. It makes it easier to leave them alone, and there is a real risk of them being stepped on accidentally. Amazons are pretty vocal, so when you hear silence ... Expect the worst, and go see if you can save whatever's left of what they are destroying!

Welcome to the Wonderful World Of Amazons! You're now a full fledged member of the 'Owned by an Amazon' Society!

Love the Name! It gives that First World War Flying Ace Edge to your Amazon that he appears to already is living up too!

So very happy to hear that your first day, well short the headset, was very successful in developing your relationship! Yup, you had several weeks to learn about each other. This so proves the need to visit the new member of the family before bring them home.

It seems that your new Thread has already received some great advice. I look forward to hearing of Baron Van Bonkers adventures!

Yes, an Amazon already have more Fun!

Day 5: I have warmed up to bonkers a lot more he really is the perfect addition to the family his favorite treats are pistachios but he only likes them in shell he won't look at them if they are out of shell. He also has a very funny hatred of squirells that he sees through his window he lets out the loudest most piercing shriek when he sees them to watch them scatter and run up trees and then he paces back and forth very content with himself.

Sounds like Bonkers is a normal, typical amazon- terrorizing the wildlife and letting them know who's the big, bad bird:D Kiwi does that too, the squirrels are his minions.

Glad you and the baron;) are getting acquainted more and that everything is heading forward in a positive direction! Amazons are awesome so I'm sure he'll soon fit in seamlessly with the flow of your family life and have you cracking up at his antics regularly:)

Day 6 today is the first day that he allowed me to scratch his head and he quickly figured out that I can help with his pin feathers so he has been chasing me around all day and jumping in my lap demanding that I preen him. Having a lap Amazon is a very odd thing but very fun.

Kiwi is just finishing up his annual big molt and still has some pins on his head and neck. Even after all these years, he still won't allow us to help with them:( Consider yourself lucky that Bonkers is letting you preen him after only 6 days!

LOL I don't see that happening! It would be a "miracle" lol..

Amy is actually "Amos". After nearly 27 years, last April during one of her wellness checks, her doc drew blood to check it, I said "what the heck" as long as blood is being taken,do a DNA on her too"

WEll imagine my surprise when I found out "she" is really a "HE"! :11:
All these years she's been pulling the feathers over my eyes! I've been living with a transgender birdie lol.

Hasn't changed anything tho. I still refer to her as "her" and is still called AMY,and my "little green girl" That'll never change :D
And thanks for the pictures!

Dang! I thought I was lucky that after 6 days my Amazon is okay with me putting my hand in the cage. After 2 weeks I was able to touch him about twice without him having too much of an issue with it. Didn't like it, but at least he did scream and try to bite when I did it. I couldn't imagine being able to have that kind of contact with mine in that little amount of time.

Sounds like you got a winner of a bird.

I spent weeks with him before he got home and he is 16 years old so he considers human attention a blessing but I'm sure if you stick with it he will be your best buddy in no time.

Today was the first day that bonkers unlocked his cage and stood on his playtop looking at me like he didn't do anything wrong. I was also on the phone with sailboat today and i see a flash of green lightning across the floor and hung up on sailboat trying to explain that the baron was on the loose and he tried to escape quarantine and meet all the birds and talk to the family dogs who were extremely afraid of him. Today I learned they amazons would do great at the nfl combine and they I need to remain more vigilant.
