And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
... I was showing Amy pictures I took when she and I visited Al and his wonderful clan and Salty..

I said to Amy.."See?? there you are with Salty, hanging out together" and I SWEAR..she said "Salty??" I almost fell off my chair!

I know that "normal" people would just look at me like I was a coo-coo and just say "uh-huh..riiiggghhhhttttt" But people like US,who have had fids for any length of time, can kind of relate to "unbelievable" things our little (or BIG) feathered friends can,and DO say! :)

It just amazes me at times, what comes out of their little beakys.
I mean, when I tried to get Smokey to step up one day,( she hated hands..was the LAST place she wanted to be) and she stopped in her tracks and said to me "What the h*** are you doing??" and never said it again...or the day I took BB home, setting up his house, then scooping him out of his little cardboard bring-me-home box,and Amy was hanging upside down, intently watching me,said " What is that??" I mean, really!

It just amazes me on what these little brains can remember,AND communicate to us!

OK..I think this would be a funny topic..who's fids have said some amazing things,in context, and hasn't said them since??

I told bonkers that I would be back later and he said "where are you going " and I was amazed. He also seems to understand amounts of time like I will say be back in a minute and he will be cool for a min or two before contact calling or I'll say I got to go for a while and he is silent and starts playing with his toys with out a peep except for "good bye"

Don't we get to see these pics too, Jim? 'Sup wit' dat? Lol!

Sounds like you've had some great one-off in context lines from your birds! For the most part, the in context stuff my birds have said are usually things that are used more than just the once. Like Jolly telling me "Out!" when he's ready to come out of his cage, or saying "Gimme kiss" when he wants one. Or saying, "well done!" when he does something particularly well and doesn't feel like waiting for me to tell him so.

TI think they def understand time. When I'm away with the band for a weekend, if I dont explain to Salty that I'll be gone 2 days but not to worry I will be back, or even when I go overseas to China for 2 weeks, if I dont take the time to explain it to Salty, my wife ( who is stuck home ) says he is an unbearable PIA, yelling and carrying on, contact calls all over the place, jumping off his boing and cage. BUT if I do tell him, she says he is fine, talks with her, plays in his cage or on the boingy.

Talking wise, Salty is still learning how to say a lot of things , so he is not cogently speaking... yet. But I am going to ask him tonight if he remembers Amy...

If Amy is a talker, I could fully believe she remembers her friend:) They are so smart like that.

Kiwi has a very limited vocabulary and range of noises and I think he's well past the age of learning anything new (haven't heard any new sounds from him since shortly after we got him and were still learning about him). He rarely says "hello" but I got bombarded with "hellos" and an unusual amount of wolf whistles while showering yesterday:52: We just took out our shower door and put up a curtain, so I can't help but think that may have had something to do with his, er, excitement. No clue why though:confused: Maybe Kiwi is interested in interior design and approves of the visual upgradee:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Those stories are so coolio!

When we were moving from New Mexico to Ohio, the Rbird's travel cage was in the passenger seat of my car. I was unaware that his water bowl was dry (maybe it splashed out, maybe he splashed it, maybe it dried up). Late in the day, I pulled over for a pit-stop and came back with a big glass of pop. The Rb said, clearly, twice... "Thirsty bird, thirsty bird." No big surprise, that's what I sometimes say to him when I'm filling or changing his water, but he never said it before or since!

Fun thread!

I disagree with that statement lol.. Now Amy is 27 ( older than Kiwi, right?) and when I had Jonesy ( the little beady-eyed monster ) and he would get in to one of his screaming fits,Amy did tell him to "SHUT UP!" And I am sure she picked that up from me

Another story about Amy and her in context talking.. A few years back, when my son James lived with me, I asked him to feed the fids for me. James doesn't really like birds  ( Dad? why don't you get a DOG?)
and when he walked up to Amys' house,he would just say "Hi bird" to her.

I have one of those Amish electric fire places in the living room. One evening Amy was walking the floor and walked by the fire place ( it was off). She stopped in front of it and looked into the front glass panel and saw her reflection, and said ' HI BIRD!" She knew what she was lol.

Too funny...and amazing lol.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaat?!? Hahaha! It seems Amy has a real gift for talking in context.

I truly think that most people seriously underestimate the intelligence of their parrots. They never cease to amaze me.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
My only bird with terrific talking ability is Gonzo, my BFA. I have fun showing him videos of himself chattering away, always stimulates his talking OVER the sound level!!

I have notice my other fids reacting to videos or pics of themselves and others! Using the iPhone in playback mode lifts their crests, makes them posture, and their eyes directly focus like a laser on the image!!

I have found that when Amy and I watch YouTube vids of other birdies doing their thing.Amy gets VERY animated :p She will poof up her face, and as the other birdie is talking,Amys' beaky starts to move,as if she is trying to talk with them, and at times she will bob her head a little too. Its clear to me that she is getting into it and enjoying herself.
Even little BB will lift up his "hat" and bang his beaky on my shoulder,or whatever he is sitting on at the time. Silly little fluff balls that they are ;)
